Essential Duties: This is skilled trades work in carpentry, communications, electrical, painting, plumbing, masonry, etc., for a variety of construction, remodeling, facility, equipment maintenance and repair projects for the Provo City Library. The individual appointed to this position will be required to do the following: perform varied tasks for predetermined projects; i.e., carpentry, electrical, painting, carpeting, etc. or as necessitated by emergency; perform inspections on projects and equipment; perform maintenance and test procedures under safe conditions; observe systems or equipment for proper operation; assist supervisor, contractors, and co-workers with any and all assigned phases of small and large projects; operate a wide variety of systems, controls, equipment, instruments, and tools; draft work plans; purchase supplies, materials, etc. as needed; maintain tools and equipment by making major/minor repairs; assist other staff as needed; and perform other related duties as required. Supervise cleaning crew. Update forms as needed. Purchase cleaning supplies and other supplies as needed.
Minimum Requirements: Apprentice: A) Two (2) years experience in a variety of trades or crafts such as carpentry, plumbing, masonry, construction, electrical, electronics, communications, etc., at a basic to intermediate level. Technician: A) Three (3) years experience as an Apprentice Facilities Maintenance Technician or five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in a variety of trades or crafts such as carpentry, plumbing, construction, electrical, etc. At both levels, an equivalent combination of job-related education and experience may be used [substituting each one year of post-secondary education/training for six months of experience]. Note: Applicants appointed to an open career series directly at higher than the entry level must satisfactorily complete the associated advancement criteria during the probationary period which includes a safety training class, division electrical test, plumbing test, and refrigeration test. New hire probationary period is one year.
License: Valid, lawful driver’s license is required at time of appointment. Applicant may be disqualified on the basis of an unacceptable driving record as reflected by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.
Selection Factors: Knowledge of the principles and practices of electrical, and plumbing trades as applied to office or building remodeling, repair, and maintenance; the use of equipment and tools common to the work; occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade; related laws, codes, rules and regulations governing related functions of the position; and the operations, functions, and terminology common to the work. Skill in performing duties in a manner that demonstrates respect, integrity, courtesy, and kindness towards fellow workers, customers, and the general public; electrical maintenance, plumbing, refrigeration, electronics, carpentry, and the use and care of related tools and equipment. Ability to assist in the operation of various tools, cleaners, compressors, generators, heaters, radios, key systems, security systems, and back flow devices; operate test meters, pneumatic controls, computer programs, tools, etc.; read and understand blueprints, sketches, and written and oral instructions; meet deadlines; and work effectively on individual or team projects.
Schedule: 4:30 am to 1:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
Salary: Apprentice: $1,172 - $1,616 biweekly (range 18); Technician: $1,357 - $1,871 biweekly (range 21); Payment will be made by direct deposit and salary will normally begin at the first step of the salary range. Overtime will normally be accrued as compensatory time. Screening: Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job-related experience, skills, knowledge, and education. Selection for this position may be based largely upon an oral interview. Criminal background checks are conducted on all City positions. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal.
Physical/Environmental Factors: This work requires: walking, bending, climbing ladders, stooping, reaching, lifting up to 80 lbs., quick movements to exit dangerous situations, and assuming uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time when necessary; working in tunnels and other enclosed places and at heights of up to 40 feet; and exposure to dangerous equipment, hazardous settings, gases in enclosed places, high voltages, and adverse weather conditions. May include exposure to high-stress situations or environments, including, handling emergency situations, meeting strict deadlines, contact with individuals in confrontational or uncomfortable circumstances, and other stressful conditions related to the workplace. Note: This position may require on-call status.
Pre-Employment Testing: Prior to appointment, applicant will be required to successfully pass a drug screening and background investigation. Individuals with unsatisfactory drug screen results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
