Provo City

2009 General Plan Update

Overview

The term “general plan” describes a general, comprehensive, long-range statement of goals and related policies to guide future growth and development of the city.  The General Plan acts as a guide, establishing policies and procedures for growth, development, conservation, and location of various land-use activities.  It is long-range, dealing with planning for the future and establishing policies for existing and future land uses.  The plan cannot be fully implemented immediately, but is implemented in phases.

Purpose

To prevent the current General Plan from becoming outdated and not reflecting the land use objectives of the City, Provo City ordinance requires the General Plan to be updated every five years. The last comprehensive update was completed in 2004. The purpose of the 2009 update is to address critical objectives that have not previously been included in the General Plan.

Staff Recommended Updates

The Planning Commission initiated the required five-year update to the Provo City General Plan earlier this year at a March open house and reception. The Planning Division staff have concluded their recommended draft update for Planning Commission review and consideration. Public comments received during the update period have been addressed within the recommended update, if appropriate.
