4800 North/Foothill Drive Extension Foothill Drive Quick Facts | Foothill Drive Chronology On July 25, 2007 at 9:00 a.m., the new 4800 North/Foothill Drive extension from Canyon Road to University Avenue in Provo was opened to the public. The opening followed a program which included remarks from elected officials and from representatives of the City, the County, and the general contractor. The mascots from Brigham Young University, Provo High School and Timpview High School participated in a competition to demonstrate the importance of this new segment of roadway in Provo and Utah County.
Plans to connect Foothill Drive from Canyon Road to University Avenue and beyond (to Orem Center Street and Interstate 15) have been a part of City and County master plans since the early 1970's. The first phase of construction on this segment of the roadway was completed in 2003 by contractor H.E. Davis & Sons. Further progress on the project was stopped due to litigation over property acquisition on the last remaining property at the east end of the project. Aspects of the eminent domain action were appealed twice to the Utah Supreme Court. Utah County was granted occupancy of this last piece of property needed for the roadway in May 2006.
During the fall of 2006, utilities were installed by Provo City crews and Geneva Rock began the final phase of construction earlier this spring. The road is anticipated to serve 6,000 vehicles per day immediately, and over 14,000 vehicles per day by 2020.
“This is an important day for Provo,” commented Mayor Lewis K. Billings. “This segment of Foothill Drive and 4800 North will serve motorists well by enhancing traffic flows, making traffic more efficient and providing important access to commercial areas for residents in the northeast part of Provo. We applaud the work of all involved in making this connector a reality.”
