Lake District Planning
The City and the neighborhoods west of I-15 have been engaged in a number of important discussions regarding planning for the future of what has become known as the Lake District. A number of planning initiatives involving this area have begun. These include plans for new arterial and collector roads, recreation of the Provo River Delta, widening of Geneva Road and others.
For more information about these planning initiatives, please visit the following links.
Mountainland Association of Governments (MAG) Long Range Transportation Plan. Because of anticipated growth not only in the Lake District but also in communities south of Provo, MAG's long range transportation plan anticipates needing additional lanes of limited access artertial streets in the Lake District.
June Sucker Recovery Program. The June Sucker is an endangered species fish that lives and reproduces in the Provo River and Utah Lake. This program works to ensure a protected habitat and spawning area for the June Sucker.
The Provo River Delta Restoration Project. This effort by several federal and state agencies is working on a plan to reroute the Provo River near Utah Lake to create a delta-like habitat for the June Sucker and other animal species.
Utah Lake Commission. The Utah Lake Commission has adopted a master plan for areas with access to Utah Lake and has recommended a model land use ordinance for communities fronting the Lake.
Provo Westside Connector. Planning is underway for a new collector road running generally from the I-15/University Avenue interchange to the Provo Municipal Airport. Environmental work is nearing completion and a preferred route has been identified.
Provo Northwest Connector. With anticipated increases in traffic as the Lake District develops further, additional road lanes will be needed. Geneva Road has limited capacity for widening, and additional access to I-15 will be difficult. Provo City is working on proposed routing for a new connector road running generally from 2000 North to Center Street just east of Utah Lake.
Vision 2030. The City's 20 year visioning effort includes vision, goals and objectives in 14 different concept areas. Many of them include vision statements related to development and natural resources preservation impacting the Lake District in the 2030 planning horizon.
