Utah State Legislature
Every year the Utah State Legislature meets to conduct the business of the state in a forty-five day session. Monday, January 243rd, will be the opening day for this year’s session and Wednesday, March 8th, at midnight, will mark the official close of the session.
The Utah Legislature is comprised of two deliberative bodies. The Utah State Senate has twenty-nine members each elected to serve four year terms. Each senator represents a population of about 60,000.
The Utah House of Representatives has seventy-five members elected to serve two year terms. Each house member represents a population of about 23,000. The presiding officer of the Utah House is the Speaker of the House, a position currently held by Representative Becky Lockhart from Provo.

Every year the Legislature takes action on a broad spectrum of issues that impact Utahns at the state and local level. When the session ends on March 10, a new state budget will be in place which is expected to be approaching $12 billion.
