    Questar Pipeline Upgrade Project

Questar Gas to begin next phase of Utah County Pipeline Upgrade project

Questar Gas will begin construction on the fourth phase of its Utah County Pipeline Upgrade project on Aug. 1. During this phase the company will replace a one-mile section of high-pressure steel pipeline near the mouth of Provo Canyon. The portion of pipe to be replaced extends from the hillside above University Avenue (U.S. Highway 189) about one-half mile south of the mouth of Provo Canyon to the Murdock Canal at 1100 East and 800 North (State Road 52) in Orem.

Construction is expected to be completed by Oct. 1. Construction will include pipeline crossing on University Avenue and at 800 North at 1560 East, and trenching a short section along the north side of 800 North from 1560 East to 1100 East. Two-way traffic on University Avenue and 800 North will be maintained during construction. However, lane restrictions will be in effect and temporary delays may occur. The company does not anticipate any interruption of natural gas service to customers in the area during construction.

The following sidewalks will be closed during construction:

    • The sidewalk on the north side of 800 North between 1100 East and 1560 East will be closed from Aug. 1 to Oct. 1.
    • A short section of the Provo River Trail paralleling University Avenue between 800 North and the intersection of North Canyon Road will be closed from Aug. 1 to Aug. 15. The trail, however, will be open for the Provo Canyon Half-marathon Race scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 13.

In addition, access to 1100 East northbound from 800 North will be closed beginning some time in mid-to-late August. This closure is necessary in order to connect the new pipe with the existing pipe and to perform required testing of the new pipe. Access to the residential area affected by this closure will be maintained via 1200 North from 800 East and 1000 East.

Questar Gas Utah County Pipeline Upgrade project is a multi-year effort that began in 2002 and is expected to be completed by 2007. The project entails replacing 30 miles of 18-inch-diameter steel pipeline (known as Feeder Line 26) installed in 1953 from Payson Canyon to the Geneva site with 24-inch-diameter pipe. Questar Gas is performing the upgrade to improve system integrity and meet growing demand for natural gas in Utah County.

So far Questar Gas has replaced about 23 continuous miles of pipe stretching from Questar Gas's Payson Gate to the north side of the mouth of Rock Canyon in Provo.
