Subcommittee Topics
The Vision 2030 Steering Committee is creating 13 subcommittees on a wide variety of topics and asking these groups to prepare vision statements in each broad topic areas. The subcommittees and some sample questions include:
Safety--Coy Porter, Chair
1. Are serious crimes in Provo at an acceptable level?
2. Is gang activity in Provo sufficiently controlled? (i.e. graffiti removal; anti-gang prevention)
3. How should Provo encourage community crime prevention?
4. Are Provo streets, both downtown and in neighborhoods, considered safe and walkable?
5. Is Provo adequately prepared for natural disasters?
6. Are emergency service response times acceptable?
Prosperity--Jeff Rust, Chair
1. How can the community leverage its highly motivated and skilled workforce to increase economic prosperity?
2. Are there future locations for retail nodes in developing or underdeveloped areas?
3. How can the City take better advantage of the transportation infrastructure (rail, freeway, etc.) for prosperity?
4. What kinds of businesses should we attract to the Mountain Vista Business Center?
5. What areas of Provo should be the focus of future economic development?
6. What industries should be attracted/retained to provide high-paying jobs for Provo residents?
7. Does Provo have adequate commercial diversity?
8. Are Provo’s commercial areas easily accessible for vehicles/pedestrians?
9. What role should the airport play in future economic development?
10. How can the City leverage the community's investment in the fiber optic network?
Unity--Ron Clark, Chair
1. How should the City respond to demographic shifts?
2. What should the community do to meet the needs of the less fortunate?
3. What services should the City and others provide for a rapidly growing and increasingly diverse senior population?
4. How can the community better integrate minority populations?
5. How can the community leverage the very high proportion of the population that speak second languages?
Public and Non-Profit Partnerships--Bill Hulterstrom, Chair
1. Are Community Based Organizations (CBOs) given adequate involvement in public processes?
2. Do Provo CBOs have ample resources/information to access Provo residents in need?
3. Are CBOs accessible to their client populations?
4. Are CBOs appropriately and equitably supported by the City?
5. How can the community better empower CBOs to serve their target populations?
Education--Greg Hudnall, Chair
1. What skills and abilities should we teach that will be important in 20 years?
2. How should the education community partner with the larger community?
3. Does Provo have adequate cultural activities/opportunities for all age groups?
4. Do businesses in the Provo area have adequate resources to recruit interns from local universities?
5. Does Provo have adequate alternative education programs that serve the needs of the residents?
6. Do Provo City Schools have acceptable dropout rates/dropout prevention programs?
7. Does Provo have/need adult education classes to improve quality of life throughout the city?
8. Does the Provo City library adequately serve residents through its programs, holdings? Do citizenshave the ability to adequately access the library?
Leisure--Clark Thorstensen, Chair
1. Should the City continue to support the East Bay Golf Course at its present location or are their other alternatives?
2. Does Provo offer enough activity variety in its parks system? (i.e. mountain biking, various sports, etc.)?
3. Should the Provo parkway trail system be expanded? If so, how?
4. Should Provo pursue larger recreational facilities to attract regional interests? (Theme parks, stadiums, etc.)
5. Should Provo have themed public parks (i.e. Discovery Park in PG) to attract outside residents as well as Provo residents?
6. Does Provo have an adequate number of parks for residents?
Natural Resources--Ned Hill, Chair
1. What should the city do to protect existing foothills? Lake areas? Rivers?
2. How can we enhance recreational opportunities associated with Utah Lake?
3. How can the Provo River become more of an economic and recreational asset to the community?
4. What should be done to protect Rock Canyon?
5. Does Provo City have adequate water/sewer capacity for projected future growth?
6. Should Provo City practice water conservation?
7. Does Provo have adequate stormwater capabilities to handle potential floods?
Mobility and Transportation--Kelly Ward, Chair
1. How can the community promote the use of transit and other modes of transportation?
2. Does Provo offer ample multimodal transportation opportunities? (i.e. bikes, trails, etc.)
3. Considering population projections, does Provo have an adequate multi-modal transportation plan to promote connectivity throughout the city?
4. Should Provo change its current street development standards to incorporate complete streets and to allow for flexible street widths?
5. Is the Provo airport adequately planned for future use?
6. Does Provo have sufficient public transit routes to provide access to residential/commercial areas?
Family and Neighborhoods--RaDene Hatfield, Chair
1. What role should the City play in neighborhoods? What role should be played by neighbors themselves?
2. How can the City empower neighborhood revitalization?
3. Are there areas that should be transitioning from their current character to something else?
4. How should community involvement in existing neighborhoods be encouraged/increased?
5. Do existing neighborhood organizations meet the needs of their residents?
Land Use and Growth--Brad Farnsworth, Chair
1. What should the character/form of downtown Provo be?
2. Should residential areas of the city have specific building form requirements?
3. What elements should be included in new residential developments to promote a sense of place?
4. What should the form of the various commercial/industrial areas throughout the city be?
5. What about our residential neighborhoods work? Doesn't work?
6. How should the City plan for future demand for electricity?
Communication, Image and Branding--Gary Garrett, Chair
1. What image/brand should Provo promote? What obstacles does Provo face in establishing that image/brand?
2. How should Provo promote itself as a regional center?
3. What assets does Provo have that should be promoted/marketed?
4. How can social networking be better utilized to promote the City?
Health Care--Dr. Joseph Miner, Chair
1. Are healthcare facilities accessible to all segments of the population? How can accessibility to healthcare be improved?
2. How can wellness/preventive care be better incorporated into the healthcare system?
3. Is the medical community prepared to respond to a major disaster?
4. How can the healthcare system ensure that children have adequate access to checkups/immunizations?
Heritage--Don Bush, Chair
1. What types of historic/cultural resources should be preserved?
2. What initiatives should the city pursue to protect its historic/cultural resources?
3. What measures, if any, should the city take to preserve existing neighborhood character?
4. What is the proper balance between preservation and economic development?
5. What measures, if any, should the city take to document historic/cultural resources that may be lost?
