Provo City
Provo River Parkway Trail Detour
Monday, July 26, 2010 - 11:15 AM
A portion of the Provo River Parkway Trail will be closed for I-15 construction starting July 26.  UDOT and Provo City have worked to provide a safe detour.

Construction teams on UDOT’s Utah County I-15 Corridor Expansion (I-15 CORE) are scheduled to close and detour the Provo River Parkway Trail where it crosses under I-15 beginning the week of July 26 through summer 2012. When the closed portion of the trail reopens, it will have enhanced features.

UDOT, Provo City and I-15 CORE contractor, Provo River Constructors, worked closely to provide a safe, alternate route for trail users while making improvements to expand I-15 and rebuilding the freeway bridges during the trail closure. When completed, the project will bolster access for pedestrians and cyclists traveling on the trail that crosses underneath I-15.

The existing Provo River Parkway Trail has potential safety hazards including narrow passing areas and bridge crossings with short height clearance at I-15. When reopened, enhancements to the trail under I-15 will include a 10-foot-wide, newly-paved trail, an eight-foot height clearance on bridge crossings and lighted undercrossing to improve safety and visibility.

During the two-year closure, trail users from the east will detour at Independence Drive to 820 North. On the west side, users will detour at Lakeshore Drive or Geneva Road to cross under the freeway via 820 North.

The Provo River Parkway is a heavily-used trail that stretches 14 miles from Utah Lake to Vivian Park in Provo Canyon. The trail follows the Provo River and winds through city parks and residential and commercial developments. The trail is used for various activities including cycling, rollerblading, skateboarding, walking, jogging and horseback riding.

A map of the Provo River Parkway Trail closure detour is available on the I-15 CORE website, udot.utah.gov/i15core.
