Much of what contributes to our quality of life is due to the convictions and values of our citizens. Regardless of race, religious affiliation or socioeconomic status the people are dedicated to protecting the way of life that drew them to this valley. Low crime, family values, and community spirit are calling cards of Provo.
Public Safety
Provo City is proud of its consistently low overall crime index. Based on the Uniform Crime Report prepared by the U.S. Department of Justice, Provo's crime rates per 100,000 population are well below the national average. Most impressively, Provo's violent crimes index is more than 80% below the national average. Our newly established Community Policing program has set a new standard for public safety. Working directly with the neighborhood organizations, the sworn officers of the Provo City Police Department partner with residents to protect our quality of life. Community Policing empowers citizens and makes police officers a more visible part of the community.
Provo has 77 sworn Firefighters, 76 of which are either an EMT or paramedics. The Provo Fire Department was selected as a "Champion City" by the NFPA for its dedication and commitment to excellence in firefighting and progressive approach to fire preventive education.
Being selected as a “Champion City" helped provide the support necessary to initiate the NFPA's "Learn Not To Burn" program which brings fire fighters into schools, civic clubs, neighborhoods, and many other public and private meetings to educate Provo citizens on fire prevention and safety.
In addition, the department operates an education trailer that can be taken to almost any city event. The education trailer contains videos, demonstrations and examples of fire prevention techniques as well as interactive lessons that are both informative and entertaining. Children of all ages flood the trailer every time it appears, thus educating children in an exciting and innovative way about fire safety.
Education
One of the most important resources that Provo has to offer is its people. Woods and Pool Economics declared that Provo is "one of the nation's most intelligent work forces" The intelligence of the Provo work force is no accident.
Provo is home to Brigham Young University, one of the most respected business, law, and engineering universities in the country.
Utah County is also home to Utah Valley University (UVU). UVU, an institution recognized for its career-ready education, has been ranked among the top four comprehensive four-year public institutions in the West by U.S. News & World Report for three years running.
Provo College is located in west Provo. This institution educates and trains their students in special and entry level skills most needed in today's businesses. Demonstrating the proactive approach of these schools, Provo College openly solicits the assistance of local business leaders in designing curriculums that are responsive to the needs of business."
Religion
Provo has always been associated with strong religious values. Most people associate these values with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints because the church maintains its world wide headquarters in Utah. But to say that the religious values cherished in the State of Utah are entirely due to the Mormon church is to ignore the cultural and community contributions of the state's many other religious denominations. Locally, Utah County is well represented by many different churches.
