FY 2012 Budget
The Mayor has submitted his recommended FY 2012 budget to the Municipal Council for their review and action. The Council needs by state law to adopt a budget on or before June 22, 2011 for the new fiscal year beginning July 1.
Background
As the Mayor and the city budget team worked to prepare the budget, they used a number of different approaches to help with the major decisions.
1. The Municipal Council held a series of monthly budget retreats with the goal of creating a sustainable, long-term approach to the budget. The Council looked at a ten-year time horizon for the budget, in an effort to better balance revenues and expenditures long term. The Council's budget intent statements helped define city policy as it relates to the budget, and the Administration provided a document with the budget that summarizes how the new proposed budget addressed their budget intents.
2. The City created employee budget teams in each department to look for additional efficiencies and ways to better fund needed city services.
3. The Mayor created a citizens budget committee composed of citizens in Provo with extensive financial and budget experience in both the private a public sectors to assist in recommending budget changes to the Mayor for adoption in his recommended budget.
4. The Mayor asked residents and city employee for their own ideas on how to make the city budget balance. You can share your thoughts by completing an online survey, and you can read the comments made thus far and the City's response to them.
Following the Budget Process
Residents interested in following the process as the Municipal Council reviews the budget can visit the Council's agendas and minutes page to watch for agenda items related to the budget. As our residents read and review the proposed budget, the Mayor and Municipal Council hope that they will offer comments and thoughts about the budget.
