A valid Provo City business license is required for all businesses that are located within the corporate limits of Provo City. A business license is the means whereby Provo City Corporation grants permission to engage in a business activity at a specific location within the City. The definition of business includes every trade, occupation, profession or activity engaged in for the purpose of gain or economic profit, excluding, however, the acts of employees rendering service to employers unless otherwise specifically provided.

A local license provides assurance that the business location is properly zoned for the activity being conducted. Licensing also verifies compliance with state and local codes. This helps ensure the well being of employees and citizens.

The following State requirements must be met before applying for a Provo City Business License.

• Partnerships and sole proprietorships using a name other than a sole proprietor’s
  given legal name must register the "dba" (doing business as) name with the State
  Department of Commerce. This can be done through OneStop Online Business Registration at www.business.utah.gov/registration or at the Utah State Tax Commission,
  150 East Center, Room 1300, Provo, Utah. Phone: (801) 374-7070. There is a
  fee for the name registration.
• All businesses needing sales and use tax numbers (including persons using their own
  given names) must acquire that from the State Tax Commission.
• Corporations, limited liability companies, and partnerships must first have a federal
  EIN (Employer Identification Number). This can be acquired by completing form
  SS4 and sending it by FAX to (801) 620-7115 or by mail to Ogden Service
  Center / Mail Stop 6271, P.O. Box 9950, Ogden, Utah 84409. Response time is
  approximately fourteen days.
  
• Corporations and limited liability companies must file Articles of Incorporation with
  the Utah State Department of Commerce, Heber M. Wells Bldg., 160 East 300

• Documentation certifying the appropriate registration as per above must be
  submitted with the business license application.
