*NOTE: This classification is part of an open career series that includes: Firefighter/Paramedic, and Firefighter/Engineer. The Chief can appoint or later promote candidates to any level in this series for which the requirements are met.
Essential Duties: This is firefighting, emergency response, and rescue work for Provo Fire and Rescue. Individuals appointed to this position will be required to do the following: respond to emergency and fire scenes; fight fires by placing, connecting, and advancing hoses; operate equipment such as pumps, nozzles, ladders, hydrants, extinguishers, generators, etc.; search for and rescue victims from buildings, autos, mountains, etc.; act as an emergency medical technician, paramedic, or engineer depending upon level attained; participate in post emergency salvage operations and cleanup; operate department vehicles as primary or relief operator; and assist in pre fire planning and development of property maps and sketches. Additionally, employees will be expected to clean and maintain firefighting equipment; perform station and grounds maintenance work; participate in drills and training sessions; conduct station tours and/or assist in educating the public; and perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements: Applicants must be 18 years of age at time of testing, have a high school diploma or its equivalent (GED), be a United States citizen or in active process of becoming a citizen, and be certified as an Emergency Medical Technician (Utah State standards) and Utah State Paramedic certification. Those current out-of-state certified paramedics who complete Utah paramedic certification within six months of hire through the Utah EMS reciprocity process may be considered.
Note: Employees in this class must obtain Firefighter I and Firefighter II certifications in accordance with NFPA and Utah Fire and Rescue Academy standards within six (6) months of hire date. In addition, employees will be required to reside within a 15-mile radius of the Fire Station Headquarters, upon appointment, which shall effect no longer than a 20-minute response time in the case of emergency callback, unless otherwise approved by the department Chief.
License: Valid, lawful driver's license is required at time of application and Utah State driver's license is required upon appointment. Applicant may be disqualified on the basis of an unacceptable driving record as reflected by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.
Salary/Benefits: Firefighter/Paramedic: $1,452.81 to 1,873.99 biweekly (range 24) plus full benefits package. Benefits include: medical, dental, life, and LTD insurance plans, retirement plans, employee assistance and wellness programs, and sick, vacation, and holiday leaves. Optional plans available include: reimbursable medical and child care accounts, vision and AD&D insurance, and deferred compensation (457 & 401k) plans. (Uniforms and cleaning of uniforms are furnished.)
Testing Process: The testing process will begin with a written exam which must be passed with 70% or better. Top scoring applicants from this exam will be invited to continue in the testing process. Applicants who do not pass with 70% or better or do not make the top group will be ineligible to retest for one year. Candidates continuing in the testing process must then pass a physical abilities test and complete an oral interview. These candidates will then be ranked on an eligibility list based on by their written and oral interview scores. (The physical portion of the exam may be held at a later date depending upon weather conditions.)
Hiring: Selections are made from the eligibility list established by this process. Eligible candidates will remain on this list for two years unless removed in accordance with Civil Service Rules and Regulations. When an opening occurs, the top candidates are referred in ranking order for selection consideration. Appointment is conditional upon successful completion of a physical examination, audio gram, drug screen, and background check.
