Juvenile Firesetter
Provo Fire & Rescue began the Juvenile Firesetter Program in 1993 and is now the home for the Juvenile Fire Setter Program in Utah County. The program assists the juvenile court system, police departments, fire departments, and citizens living in Utah County in the identification of causes of juvenile fire setting.
Children generally fall into one of three classifications; the curiosity fire setter - those children involved in playing with fire while not understanding the dynamics and results of fire play; the stressed fire setter - those children who set fires because of stressful events that have or are occurring in their lives; and those children who possibly suffer from pyromania.
Provo Fire & Rescue actively educates children and parents in fire protection, fire dynamics, and fire safety. When appropriate, the child’s school teacher and other school resources are involved in monitoring behavior and rewarding good behavior. Reward systems where the child earns rewards not only for them, but for siblings as well, is established and the child is traced for one year from the date of the initial interview.
