    APPRENTICE /SR. APPRENTICE/POWER LINE WORKER

    Energy Department

    Full-time Regular Position

    Essential Duties: This is installation, maintenance, and repair of power distribution lines and equipment for the Energy Department of Provo City Corporation. The individual appointed to this position will be required to do the following: assist, connect, install, maintain, and repair energized overhead and underground power transmission lines; operate line trucks, line working apparatus, and heavy equipment; descend into tunnels or trenches; string lines; locate damaged lines and poles; troubleshoot power distribution equipment to determine problem; splice cables; repair transformers; conduct voltage and amperage checks; replace fixtures in cross arms; hang insulators; replace and repair fuses, grounds, etc.; construct cross arms, etc. to be used on power poles; provide general labor in assistance to power line work; prepare material and equipment for field work; assist in responding to emergency calls; make connections and disconnections for customers; inform public of pending outages due to repair; repair street lights; trim trees and other debris from lines and loops; and explain problems to public. Additionally, employee will be required to perform other related duties as required.

    Minimum Requirements: (1st-4th year Apprentice, Power Line Worker): All levels require a C.D.L., a high school diploma (or equivalent) and any experience which would demonstrate an ability to perform the work. Employees may be placed at the appropriate step in the apprenticeship program following successful completion of an accredited program’s corresponding exam. Power Line Worker also requires certification as a Journey Line worker through an accredited program. (Note: Applicants appointed to an open career series directly at higher than the entry level must satisfactorily complete the associated advancement criteria during the probationary period.)

    License: A valid, lawful commercial driver's license is required. (Applicant may be disqualified on the basis of an unacceptable driving record as reflected by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.)

    Note: Employees of this class are subject to Provo City residency requirements and must reside within a 15-mile radius of their primary operations facility in order to affect a 20-minute response time. Employee is required to be on-call as needed.

    Selection Factors: Knowledge of the functions, operation, and repair of electrical power distribution systems; the method and techniques of power distribution equipment installation and repair; related laws, codes, rules, and regulations; and the operations, functions, and terminology common to power line operations. Skill in performing duties in a manner that demonstrates respect, integrity, courtesy, and kindness towards fellow workers, customers, and the general public. Ability to effectively resolve operational problems; explain technical material in lay terms; deal with the public in a pleasant, courteous, and calm manner often in stressful situations; interpret and properly carry out general instructions; work effectively on individual or team projects; develop and maintain effective working relationships with the public, coworkers, and superiors; and read, interpret, and work from blueprints.

    Salary: 1st year App. $1,564 biweekly (range 19-G); 2nd year App. $1,675 biweekly (range 20-H); 3rd year App. $1,847 biweekly (range 22-H);4th year App. $2,037 biweekly (range 24-H); Power Line Worker $2,427 - $2,525 biweekly (range 28-G-I). Position includes a full benefits package, including: medical, dental, life, and LTD insurance plans, retirement plans, employee assistance and wellness programs, and sick, vacation, and holiday leaves. Optional plans available include: reimbursable medical and child care accounts, a health reimbursement arrangement; vision and AD&D insurance, and deferred compensation (457 & 401k) plans.

    Screening: Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job-related experience, skills, knowledge, and education. Selection for this position may be based largely upon an oral interview. Criminal background checks are conducted on all City positions. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal.

    Physical/Environmental Factors: This work requires physical dexterity; jumping; climbing poles and trees; pushing, pulling, and lifting heavy objects; working in vaults and at various heights; exposure to high voltages and other dangerous conditions, all weather conditions, confined spaces, emissions, and high noise levels; and other varied physical activities associated with performing the essential duties of the job. May include contact with the public in confrontational or uncomfortable circumstances and other stressful conditions related to the workplace.

    Pre-employment Testing: Prior to appointment, applicant will be required to successfully pass a drug screening and background investigation. Individuals with unsatisfactory drug screening results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
