Energy Department
Part-time Regular Position

Essential Duties: This position involves semi-skilled technical field work in the Meter Reading Division of the Provo Energy Department. The individual appointed to this position will perform the following duties: travel by vehicle or on foot to properties on assigned routes to read consumption figures on electric and water utility meters and accurately record those figures; read high-low computer checks to verify meter accuracy; enter data into hand-held meter reading device; check reports; confer with users regarding problems or questions on usage; record complaints; watch for meter malfunction, damage, or misuse; record same and make reports to supervisors; examine meter installations for leaks, unauthorized connections, or improper registration of consumption; assist other staff members as needed; and perform other related duties as required.
Note: The meter reading routes are designed to be approximately 4 hours long, including travel time. However, the SKATE program allows Meter Readers to be paid 4 hours for their route regardless of the actual time taken. A new Meter Reader can take up to 3 months to go on the SKATE program, but generally joins the program after about 6 weeks at their own discretion and receives a $1.00 per hour raise. Prior to that, the Meter Reader is paid by the hour.
Minimum Requirements: High school diploma or its equivalent, and any combination of experience and training which would display an ability to do the job. Preference given to applicant with experience in using hand held ITRON meter reading device. The individual appointed to this position will be required to use their own vehicle. Proof of insurance will be required.
License: Valid, lawful driver's license is required at time of appointment. Applicant may be disqualified on the basis of an unacceptable driving record as reflected by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.
Selection Factors: Knowledge of: related laws, codes, rules, and regulations governing energy field operations; policies and procedures established for the work system; the operations, functions, purposes, and terminology common to energy field operations; and basic English composition, spelling, and grammar. Ability to: deal with the public in a pleasant, courteous, and calm manner in all circumstances; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; develop and maintain effective working relationships with the public, coworkers, and superiors; and handle routine mathematical calculations quickly and accurately.
Wage: $10.20 per hour. Payment will be made by direct deposit.
Schedule: Approximately twenty (20) to thirty (30) hours per week. Flexible, between 7:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Screening: Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job-related experience, skills, knowledge, and education. Selection may be based largely upon an oral interview. Criminal background checks are conducted on all City positions. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal.
Physical/Environmental Factors: This work requires: extensive walking and bending; some lifting up to 30 lbs.; performance of duties in all weather conditions; and exposure to dogs, spiders, snakes, and hazardous gases. This position may also include exposure to high-stress situations or environments, including contact with the public in confrontational or uncomfortable circumstances.
Pre-employment Testing: Prior to appointment, applicant will be required to successfully pass a drug screening and background investigation. Individuals with unsatisfactory drug screening results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
