    WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR/ LIFEGUARD

    (Aquatics Specialist)

    Aquatics Division

    Part time and Seasonal Positions


    Essential Duties: These are Red Cross certified lifeguarding and swimming instructor positions in the Aquatics Division of the Provo City Parks and Recreation Department. Employees appointed to these positions will be required to lifeguard and instruct water safety courses (swim lessons) at the Veteran's Memorial Splash Pool and/or the Provo Recreation Center. Employees will maintain a visual watch of facility activities and swimmers, provide first aid and rescue when necessary, and teach basic Red Cross sanctioned swimming classes. Additionally, employees will be required to assist the Aquatics Director and staff and perform other related work as required.

    Minimum Requirements
    : Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certifica­tion, Red Cross WSI Certification and CPR. Preference will be given to applicants with both WSI and Lifeguarding Certification.  Applicants must be 18 years of age at time of appointment

    Selection Factors: Number of aquatics courses completed, i.e. First Aid, CPR, lifeguard training, WSI; skills obtained from such courses; previous aquatics-related experience; and effective oral communication skills.

    Wage: Lifeguarding wage: $8.00 per hour. WSI teaching wage: $9.00 per hour. Water Aerobics wage: $9.49.

    Hours: Hours will vary 15-40 hours per week. Flexible shifts.

    Screening: Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job-related experience, skills, knowledge, education, and passing water test. Selection for this position may be based largely upon an oral interview. Criminal background checks are conducted on all City positions. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal.

    Physical/Environmental Factors: These positions require physical strength and agility to perform the work, including: water rescues, standing, bending, and swimming during swim lessons and safety assistance. The ability to work in various weather conditions, work with the public in possibly stressful situations; and exposure to pool chemicals and the sun.
