CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE

Part-time Regular Position

Essential Duties: This is basic, entry level utility customer service work in support of the Customer Services Division of the Energy Department of Provo City Corporation. The individuals appointed to these positions will be required to staff the new call center by performing the following duties: answer customer questions; contact customers by telephone, facsimile, and mail; answer telephone and route calls as necessary; advise and assist customers in procedures for acquiring utility services; review utility credit status and applications for service; determine if deposit and additional fees are required; refer customers to financial assistance sources when appropriate; edit customer file data for connect and disconnect; initiate work orders for completion by field technicians; maintain customer computer files; schedule customer utility electric, water, waste water, storm water, and sanitation service connects and disconnects; resolve basic customer utility connect and disconnect problems; answer general and basic customer utility questions; provide account information to individuals and commercial customers; inform citizens of general City information; compare and balance remittance stub to check; check remittance stub and payment for correct processing data; compute totals on multiple payments; sort payments by type; handle returned mail problems; sort and file customer cards; fill office supply orders; maintain central stockroom; distribute mail; assist other staff members as needed, and perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements: High school diploma or G.E.D. and six (6) months experience in bookkeeping, accounting, cashiering, or related field; or an equivalent combination of job-related education and experience [substituting each one year of post-secondary education/training for six months of experience]. Spanish language proficiency desired.
Selection Factors: Basic knowledge of: administrative and clerical support functions including the operation of standard office machines and equipment; related laws, codes, rules, and regulations governing related functions of the position; the operations performed and purposes served by the Customer Services Division; computerized accounting practices as required by the position; basic English composition, spelling, and grammar. Basic skill in typing and 10-key adding machine. Ability to: deal with the public in a pleasant, courteous, and calm manner in all circumstances; understand and follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; handle routine mathematical calculations quickly and accurately; work with speed and accuracy when dealing with the public; and develop and maintain effective working relationships with the public, coworkers, and superiors.
Wage: $10.68 per hour. Payment will be made by direct deposit.
Schedule: These positions will be in 4 hour blocks of time during the evenings, nights, and weekends. Exact schedule to be discussed in the interview.
Screening: Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job-related experience, skills, knowledge, and education. Selection for this position may be based largely upon an oral interview.
Physical/Environmental Factors: Must remain seated or standing at a computer or desk for extended periods of time. Exposure to high-stress situations or environments including contact with irate and possibly hostile customers.
