Essential Duties: This is highly skilled mechanical diagnosis and repair work at the golf course of the Provo City Parks and Recreation Department working on gasoline and/or diesel driven vehicles, golf equipment and other equipment including hydraulic, air, and electrical control systems. The individual appointed to this position will be responsible to the golf course superintendent or designee and will perform the following duties: review, diagnose, repair, and overhaul all types and sizes of gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, rollers, bearings, reels, drive train components, hydraulic and air brake systems, air conditioning and other systems; use and interpret readings of electrical testing equipment; read and interpret schematic diagrams; inspect, identify, and repair the systems, controls, and mechanics on various types of machinery and equipment; repair on-board computer systems; maintain records and work logs including materials used and time spent; prepare order lists and work invoices; order parts and supplies; perform scheduled preventive maintenance, general tune-ups, replace worn out or broken parts, and repair seat frames and upholstery as needed; perform field repair; may repair body damage to vehicles and golf equipment on metal and fiberglass; operate winches as needed; may train or supervise other workers in the mechanical repair of machinery equipment and use of tools and shop equipment; and perform other related work as needed.
Minimum Requirements: Four (4) years of general mechanic experience in both gasoline and diesel engine maintenance and repair including experience with heavy duty equipment and trucks; and greens mowers, tee mowers, and rough mowers (which include reel and rotary mower blades). One year experience working on and evaluating golf course equipment is preferred. Equivalent combinations of education and/or experience may be considered. New hire probationary period will be one (1) year.
License/Certificate: Valid lawful Commercial Driver’s License is required.
Selection Factors: Knowledge of vehicle and equipment service procedures; occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work; the principles of electrical conduction and insulation; policies and procedures established for the work system; and basic English composition, spelling, and grammar. Skill in performing duties in a manner that demonstrates respect, integrity, courtesy, and kindness towards fellow workers, customers, and the general public; the use and care of mechanical, electrical, and other specialized tools and testing equipment; and the diagnoses and repair of a wide variety of motorized vehicles, hydraulics, electrical systems, and equipment. Ability to read and interpret line drawings and blueprints, service charts and records; weld and braze; work safely around hazardous equipment; perform work with speed and accuracy; and develop effective work methods.
Salary: Mechanic I: $1,231 - $1,697 biweekly (range 19); Mechanic II: $1,357 - $1,871 biweekly (range 21). Payment will be made by direct deposit and salary will normally begin at the first step of the salary range. Overtime will normally be accrued as compensatory time. Position includes a full benefits package, including: medical, dental, life, and LTD insurance plans, retirement plans, employee assistance and wellness programs, and sick, vacation, and holiday leaves. Optional plans available include: reimbursable medical and child care accounts, a health reimbursement account, a health savings account, vision and AD&D insurance, and deferred compensation (457 & 401k) plans.
Screening: Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job-related experience, skills, knowledge, and education. Selection for this position may be based largely upon an oral interview. Criminal background checks are conducted on all City positions. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal.
Physical/Environmental Factors: Work is performed in an office, the field, and/or motor shop and exposes the incumbent to conditions such as fumes, noxious odors, hazardous chemicals, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation that could affect the respiratory system, eyes, or skin; also exposes the incumbent to possible bodily injury from moving mechanical parts of equipment, tools, and/or machinery. Work is performed for sustained periods of time outdoors and occasionally in hot, cold, or inclement weather; and requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
Pre-employment Testing: Prior to appointment, applicant will be required to successfully pass a drug screening and background investigation. Individuals with unsatisfactory drug screening results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
