LABORER 
Water Distribution Section/Public Works Department
Part-time Regular Position

Essential Duties: This is a part time laborer position in the Water Distribution Section of the Public Works Department of Provo City Corporation. The individual hired for this position will be required to perform the following duties: utilize shovel and other hand tools in assisting in the excavation of water mains, service lines, fire hydrants, valves, water meters, and other related facilities for the purpose of maintenance and/or installation; operate pavement saw, jackhammer and other power tools; operate drop hammer and dump truck; assist in maintenance and repair of water mains, service lines, fire hydrants, fountains and sprinklers; assist in the installation of water meters; may rebuild and test large meters, change-out meters, and assist with billing inquiries; assist in the maintenance and repair of equipment and in thawing frozen water pipes; assist other crew members as needed, and perform other related duties as required.
 
Minimum Requirements: Any training or experience which would demonstrate an ability to perform the work. Applicant must have the following: physical strength and agility enough to perform the work, ability to follow directions and communicate with the public in a courteous manner, and a knowledge of the safe use of hand tools and equipment required by the position. Preference will be given to applicants with work experience in maintenance and minor repairs of mechanical or hydraulic equipment, construction work or other work where physical labor and mechanical aptitude were demonstrated. 
 
License: Valid, lawful driver's license is required at time of appointment. Preference given to candidates with a commercial driver's license. (Applicant may be disqualified on the basis of an unacceptable driving record as reflected by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.)
 
Wage: $12.00 per hour depending upon skill level and experience. Payment will be made by direct deposit. 
 
Hours: 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. 
 
Physical/Environmental Factors: This work requires burning weeds, bending, carrying, occasional heavy lifting, loading, digging holes, and other excavations; and exposure to adverse weather conditions, working in the river, high noise levels, and pesticides. Job may also require exposure to small confined spaces. 
 
Screening: Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job related experience. Selection for this position may be based largely upon an oral interview. Criminal background checks are conducted on all City positions. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal. 
 
Pre-employment Testing: Prior to appointment, applicant will be required to successfully pass a drug screening and background investigation. Individuals with unsatisfactory drug screening results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
