    GENERAL LABORER

    Cemetery Maintenance Division

    Part-time Seasonal Positions

    Positions Available: Six (6)


    Essential Duties: These are laborer positions in the Cemetery Maintenance Division of the Provo City Parks and Recreation Department. The individuals appointed to these positions will be required to do the following: perform general grounds maintenance work, including: mowing grounds by hand or with power mowers, using power string trimmers; installing and maintaining sprinkler systems, affixing and setting sprinkler heads; assisting in maintaining shrubs and flower beds; performing general construction and maintenance work on buildings in the cemetery itself–including plumbing and painting; possibly operating heavy equipment such as trucks and specialized cemetery maintenance equipment; using various hand and power tools in performance of heavy manual labor; and maintaining tools and equipment. Employees will also be required to perform other related duties as required.


    Minimum Requirements: Any training or experience which would demonstrate an ability to perform the work.  Applicant must have the following: physical strength and agility to perform the work, ability to follow directions and communicate with the public in a courteous manner, and a knowledge of the safe use of hand tools and equipment required by the position.


    Wage: $8.00 - $10.00 per hour depending upon skill level and experience. Payment will be made by direct deposit.


    Hours/Duration of Position: Monday through Friday–occasionally on Saturdays. Hours vary from approximately 40 hours per week during the summer to 20 hours per week during the other seasons. Exact schedule will be discussed in the interview and schedule is subject to change. Must be available Memorial Day weekend if needed. The duration of the positions will be from March to November 1, 2008, depending upon department need.


    Screening: Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job related experience. Selection for this position may be based largely upon an oral interview. Criminal background checks are conducted on all City positions. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal.


    Pre-employment Testing: Prior to appointment, applicant will be required to successfully pass a drug screening and background investigation. Individuals with unsatisfactory drug screening results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.


    Physical/Environmental Factors: Applicant will be required to work in adverse weather conditions and high noise levels; and perform the following: bending, carrying, heavy lifting, loading, digging trenches, holes, and other excavations.
