    Meet the Mayor

Lewis K. Billings, a lifelong resident of Provo, Utah, was elected Provo City Mayor in November 1997, after completing three years as Chief Administrative Officer and Director of Community and Government Relations for the City of Provo. Prior to his service to Provo City, Mayor Billings was President and Managing Partner of IDC, an investment partnership specializing in "turnkey" lease facilities for small to medium sized businesses. Before joining IDC in December of 1983, Mr. Billings was Senior Executive Vice President and General Manager of CalDisk, a manufacturer and worldwide supplier of rotating memory storage products for computer applications.

Mayor Billings has been involved with a wide variety of boards and commissions including service as Chairman of the Utah State Quality Growth Commission, a member of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, on the Board of Directors of the Utah Municipal Power Agency, and as a member of the Utah County Clean Air Commission, the American Public Power Association’s Policy Boards National Legislative Policy Council, and the United States Conference of Mayor’s Standing Committee on Energy and Environment. Mayor Billings is a strong proponent of using technology to enhance the lives of Provo City residents. He has been a leader in promoting the deployment and use of high speed broadband technology.

Mayor Billings has also been instrumental in crafting legislative solutions that have preserved the rights of municipal governments to supply high speed internet service to their residents when incumbent providers have failed or refused to do so. One of his major strengths, as one legislator participant observed, is that "Mayor Billings understands intimately the technology of how broadband works, not just its benefits." An active participant in the Republican Party, Mayor Billings has been a delegate to four Republican National Conventions and was a member of the electoral college for the State of Utah in 2000. Together with his wife and his family, Mayor Billings enjoys restoring antique automobiles, raising horses, and numerous other community organizations and events including the design and construction of the seven foot lighted ball used for the downtown New Year’s Eve countdown each year with his teenage son, Sam.
