The Board of Adjustment consists of five members and up to two alternates. Each term is five years with one member’s term expiring each year. Board members should be able to handle stressful situations, and be able to deal with a range of emotions from applicants in a professional manner.

The Board of Adjustment hears and decides on appeals of Planning Commission decisions, appeals of zoning decisions, variances, and nonconforming uses.

The Board of Adjustment meets the 3rd Thursday of each month. The pre-meeting begins at 5:30 p.m., and the public hearing begins at 6:00 p.m. and can last several hours. Board members have a fair amount of reading before each meeting and often make site visits to the properties on the agenda. Special meetings can be held on an as-needed basis.

Board of Adjustment Members should be able to:
•    Be willing to study and take time to understand Provo City zoning ordinances
•    Deal with stressfull and emotional situations
•    Follow the law even when you may not personnaly agree with it
•    Apply the law in a fair and evenhanded way
