Start Smart Program

What is Start Smart?
Start Smart is an instructional level youth hockey program, designed to give kids ages 5-13 the necessary skills needed to eventually play in the Peaks Youth Hockey League. Participation in the Start Smart program is generally required prior to entering the Peaks Youth Hockey League.
When is Start Smart?
The Peaks Ice Arena runs its Start Smart program during the weekday. Generally, the Start Smart program runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the fall/winter. Start Smart is a 24 session program consisting of four (4) levels of instruction. Each level from beginner to advanced is done in 6 session increments. Each session is generally run during the evenings for one (1) hour. The cost for each 6 session level is $50. For all inquiries, please contact the Peaks Hockey & Sports Coordinator, Ed Lukacs, at elukacs@provo.utah.gov.
Do I need to know how to ice skate to participate?
Basic ice skating skills, up to Hockey Level 3 of the USFSA guidelines, are required for participation in this program. All beginning level skaters should attend at least one semester of the Learn-to-Skate program before signing up for Start Smart.
What equipment is required for participation?
Basic hockey equipment is also required for participation in the Start Smart program. This includes hockey skates, helmet/mask, shin guards, elbow pads, hockey gloves, and a hockey stick. Hockey pants are optional, however they are recommended. Equipment sets are available for students 8 years and younger as part of the program. For those over the age of 8; skates, helmet w/mask, shin guards, and hockey gloves are available for rent through the Peaks rental area. All remaining equipment, including sticks, are available for purchase at any local hockey shop.
