Uniformed Patrol Officers
The Patrol Division is overseen by a captain who is assisted by lieutenants and sergeants. We are a 24-hour operation with three shifts: Days, Swings, and Graves. Each shift is assigned a lieutenant and two sergeants.
There are 50 uniformed officers, ten supervisors, two office specialists, and one Crime Analyst. The Patrol Division is also supplemented with reserve officers.
The Patrol Division consists of numerous specialty teams including Community Oriented Policing, Bike Patrol team, Traffic Enforcement, Parking Enforcement, and Animal Control. The Traffic Investigation team is housed under the Patrol Division.
Community Oriented Policing
The goal of the COP unit is to enhance the quality of life for the citizens of Provo by solving recurring neighborhood problems. The COP team consists of a sergeant, six officers, and coordinator. There is an officer assigned to each of the seven Provo City areas. For more information, click the link above.
Animal Control
Members of the Animal Control Unit respond to requests from officers, as well as calls from the general public. The unit is tasked with the duties of Animal Bite Incidents, Illegal Animals, Licensing of Animals, Lost Pets, Stray or Nuisance Animals, and Vicious Animals. To contact the Animal Control Unit through Dispatch at 801-852-6210
Traffic Enforcement Team
The Traffic Team is comprised of three officers and one sergeant. The team is tasked with enforcing traffic laws within Provo City. The officers work mainly high traffic streets but occasionally check areas where there have been requests from citizens for more enforcement.
Parking Enforcement
Provo Police has four part-time parking officers. They enforce parking ordinances on different shifts with coverage Monday through Saturday. Special attention is given to timed parking zones around the BYU campus and the downtown streets. The officers also patrol residential neighborhoods throughout Provo City. Other duties include clearing fix-it tickets, doing VIN inspections, filling in for school crossing guards, and assisting Patrol Officers as needed.
Traffic Accident Investigation Team
The Traffic Accident Investigation Team investigates or assists with the investigation of the accidents during which individuals have sustained very serious or fatal injuries. They may also investigate the accidents which have complexities beyond the skills possessed by the original officer. The investigation may include mathematical and computer analysis and reconstruction. The team is comprised of one sergeant and five officers.
Bike Patrol
There are four officers assigned to the Provo Police Bike Patrol. They patrol the downtown neigborhoods on bicycles which allows them opportunity to interact with the public and sneak up on the criminals. They also assist with bike rodeos, special events, parades, First Night, and any other assignments where a uniformed officer on a bike would be most beneficial.
