Provo City will test its system of emergency sirens at noon on Tuesday. The city conducts this annual test to make sure the sirens are working and so the public can experience the operation of the system before a real emergency. It also serves as a reminder to vote.
One siren is located in the downtown area at 351 W. Center St., and three others are located in the Riverbottoms area at about 2750 N., 3800 N., and 5200 N. along University Avenue.
The downtown siren located on the roof of Provo City Fire Station 1 is a Thunderbolt dual-tone model built by Federal Enterprises during the 1950's. It generates 126 decibels of sound measured from 100 feet away and can be heard within a one-mile radius. The siren, along with the three sirens in the Riverbottoms area, will reach an estimated 18,000 residences and businesses on Tuesday.
In the event of a real emergency, the public is advised to turn to their local emergency broadcast stations, KSL-AM 1160 and KBYU-FM 89.1.
