Provo Mayor Lewis K. Billings joined Brad Sears, REMS Development LCC, Soren Simonsen, AIA, Cooper Roberts Simonsen Associates, Provo Redevelopment Agency Chair George Stewart and Redevelopment Director Paul Glauser to announce a major new project in Provo’s Historic Downtown. Mayor Billings characterizes the project as one of the most exciting and comprehensive developments ever to be announced in the city’s historic district.
As planned, the University Tower project consists of a ten-story mid-rise building filling the space between the Wells Fargo Center and the historic Knight Block on University Avenue. The project is mixed-use and would include retail on the ground floor with office and possibly residential space on the upper floors.
The project also includes construction of a four-story retail-residential building at approximately 25 E. Center between the historic Knight Block and the Gates Snow Building. The portion of this building fronting Center Street would be only three stories in keeping with the scale of historic buildings. This new building interconnects with the ten-story mid-rise building.
A second project phase includes the construction of a four-story retail-residential building (three stories on the Center Street frontage) at 65 E. Center Street next to Ottavio’s restaurant.
New construction will be complementary to the historic nature of the downtown and the Knight Block and Gates Snow buildings will undergo exterior restoration in keeping with accepted historic preservation standards.
The University Tower project would bring additional residential and office space, as well as some retail space to downtown Provo, contributing to a thriving day-and-night downtown environment.
