Recycling Facts and News You Can Use!

Did you know that much of what you throw away could be recycled? The following items can be deposited in the blue recycling containers for processing into usable products: newspapers, magazines, junk mail, glossy ads, phone books, plastics #1 & #2 (soda pop and water bottles, milk jugs, cleaning and laundry detergent containers, etc.), tin and aluminum cans, small appliances, i.e., irons, toasters, pots and pans, corrugated cardboard, cereal and food boxes, paper towel and toilet paper rolls.

These items do not need to be sorted. They can be put directly into the can.

Waste Management's current list of acceptable and unacceptable items for recycling.

Prevent Identity Theft

Shred anything with your name or confidential information. Rather than dumping loose shredded paper into the blue container, put it in a clear garbage bag tied up. It will be easily identified at the processing facility and put in the paper bin for recycling.

Recycling Do's
  • Do your part and make a difference by recycling everything you can that's recyclable.
  • Do collect plastic grocery bags in a single bag and tie it before putting it in the blue can. Loose plastic grocery bags and metal clothes hangars clog up the processing machinery, causing costly downtime. Similarly, tie several clothes hangers together in a bundle. These items will be easily identified by line-sorter personnel and put in a bin for recycling.

Recycling Dont's
  • Don't separate or sort different types of materials into plastic bags. Just put all the recyclables in the recycling container loose for user and processing convenience. (Except for plastic grocery bags.)
  • Don't bother to remove lables or rinse out plastic containers and metal cans. Also, there is no need to replace the lids on bottles. Just empty containers of all contents and toss them in the blue container.
  • Don't place any items in the containers that are stained or soiled with food material, i.e., pizza boxes, aluminum foil, etc. These items contaminate the other clean materials and reduce commodity value.
  • Don't put glass or styrofoam in the blue container. These items are not acceptable at this time.
  • Don't put wood or green waste in blue container. These items are unacceptable materials.

Provo's Alternate Recycling Program

Drop-off Recycling (at compost station)
Provo now has another option for those who would like to recycle but prefer not to have the curbside recycling container at your house. You can now take plastics #1 & #2, cardboard, newspapers, junk mail, phone books, aluminum and tin cans, etc. to the drop-off bin located at the compost station, 1625 South Industrial Parkway, Provo UT.
  • Compost station hours are: Spring/Summer/Fall: Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 6 p.m., and Saturdays 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Winter: December 2009 - Open Fridays and Saturdays only - 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.; January 2010 - Open Jan. 5 - 9 (Tuesday - Saturday of first week of January only) 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Closed January 10 - February 28, 2010.
  • There is no charge to drop items off at this bin. The bin is separated into sections for plastics, paper/cardboard, and metals.
  • Please do not bring non-recyclable garbage to the drop-off bin.
