What Level Should I Put My Child In???
This is a guide to help you, the parents to decide which level is best for their child.
The Provo Recreation Center reserves the right to move children where we deem necessary and where there is a class available.

(1 parent per child)
*No skill requirement
*This class is for children 6 months - 2 years old
*Adults will be taught skills that will allow them to each their child. Will work on water adjustment and will introduce basic swimming skills such as arm strokes, kicks, bubble blowing, going under water, etc.
Pre-Level 1:
(Max class size=5)
*Must be willing to get into water without a parent.
*Pre-levels are for children ages 3-4 only!
*Water entry. Walk in chest-deep water. Supported float on front and back. Supported kick on front/back. Bubble blowing. Underwater exploration. Rolling back to front and front to back. Life jacket safety skills.
Pre-Level 2:
(Max class size=5)
*Must be able to get into water without a parent.
*Must be able to perform all skills covered in Pre-Level 1.
*Pre-levels are for children ages 3-4 only!
*Water entry/exit. Underwater pool exploration. Front/back float. Front/back glide. Flutter kick on front/back. Back/front crawl arm action. Front/back crawl combined stroke. Rolling back to front/front to back. Life jacket safety skills.
Level 1:
(Max class size=6)
*Must be able to get into water without a parent.
*Must be 5 years or older.
*Water entry/exit. 5 bobs to chin level. Bubble blowing. Underwater object recovery w/eyes open. Front/back float (3 sec.) and recovery. Roll over front to back/back to front. Change direction of travel. Alternating/simultaneous arm action on front and back. Alternating/simultaneous flutter kick on front and back. Front/back crawl combined stroke. Water and life jacket safety skills.
Level 2:
(Max class size=6)
*Must be able to perform all skills covered in Level 1.
*Must be 5 years or older.
*Water entry (jump) and exit. Bobs. Under water object recovery w/eyes open. Front/back float (5 sec.) and recovery. Front/back glide. Change swimming direction on front or back. Tread water using arms and legs. Combined front/back crawl strokes (5 yds). Finning and sculling arm actions. Water and life jacket safety skills.
Level 3:
(Max class size=6)
*Must be able to perform all skills covered in Level 2.
*Must be 5 years or older.
*Retrieve object. Bob in chest deep water. Jump into deep water. Rotary breathing. Compact and kneeling dives. Front and back glide (2 body lengths). Front and back crawl (15 yds). Tread water (30 sec). Butterfly kick and body motion. Change from vertical to horizontal on front and back. Safety rules. Life jacket safety.
Level 4:
(Max class size=8)
*Must be able to perform all skills covered in Level 3.
*Must be 5 years or older.
*Compact and stride dives. Compact jump from height w/ lifejacket. Swim underwater. Feet-first surface dive. Open turn on front/back with streamlined push off. Tread water (1 min.). Breaststroke (15 yds). Begin to learn butterfly, sidestroke, and elementary backstroke. Care for conscious choking victim.
Level 5:
(Max class size=8)
*Must be able to perform all skills covered in Level 4.
*Must be 5 years or older.
*Shallow dive. Glide (2 body lengths). Swim front and back crawl (50 yds). Back float or scull (2 min). Elementary backstroke (25 yds). tread water with two different kicks (2 min). Breaststroke (25 yds). Flip turn while swimming on front and back. Tuck and pike surface dive. Rescue breathing and survival swimming skills.
Level 6:
(Max class size=8)
*Level 6 offers four different areas of emphasis, each being a separate class. Please refer to the Recreation Center for more information.
