Healthy Neighborhoods

Healthy Neighborhoods Initiative

Healthy Neighborhoods is a city-wide initiative to help Provo neighborhoods become Neighborhoods of Choice. Neighbors can work together to recognize their assets, create a vision, develop a strategic plan for implementing their goals and measuring their successes. The Healthy Neighborhoods Initiative gives residents the tools to build equity in their neighborhoods, both in their homes and in their social network. Strategies for building Healthy Neighborhoods center around four areas:

Maintaining good physical conditions and high standards for property maintenance
Strong social connections and investment of “social capital” in the neighborhood
Creating and maintaining a positive neighborhood image
Sustaining and increasing homeowner’s assets through a viable real estate market

Neighborhoods of Choice

In today’s marketplace consumers have many choices, and there are many neighborhoods and cities competing for consumer’s dollars. When making the decision to invest, a consumer wants a reasonable level of confidence that their investment will increase in value and that the standards and conditions of the neighborhood will remain the same. The Healthy Neighborhood approach is to set goals and measure outcomes in areas that will give neighbors and consumers the confidence they need to invest their time and money in the neighborhood.

Neighborhood Driven

The Healthy Neighborhoods Initiative is a neighborhood driven approach where the vision, goals and implementation are determined by the neighborhood. The Provo City Redevelopment Agency and Provo Municipal Council Neighborhood Program provide assistance to neighborhoods through:
  • Healthy Neighborhoods Visioning Training
  • Develop Neighborhood Action Plans with neighborhoods that have completed Visioning Training
  • Municipal Council Neighborhood Program grants
  • Advocates for the Healthy Neighborhood program and philosophy
  • Partnerships with local non-profits for neighborhood projects to support positive neighborhood image
