The largest and most obvious benefit Provo City Power provides its customers is a contribution of 10% of electricity sales revenue to the City's General Fund. Regardless of what the expenditures have been for the year, Provo Power gives 10% of these revenues to the City. Besides this 10% contribution, the Energy Department provides many other benefits to the City and her citizens. For example, the Department pays for the street lighting for Provo. Cities which use private companies for electricity, generally pay for the operation and maintenance of street lights. Another benefit provided by the Department is Christmas lights. Every year the Department sets up Christmas lights on some of the City's main streets with no user charges or fees.
Benefits of Control
Perhaps less tangible but arguably more important are the benefits of control. Because Provo City Power is community-owned, the citizens of Provo have more control over the direction and operation of the utility. Though the citizens don't vote to directly determine utility policy, they do vote for the Mayor and Council Persons who do have direct control over Provo City Power. As the needs and concerns of Provo's citizens change, Provo City Power adapts to meet those needs and concerns.
