Interested in Becoming a Firefighter? Provo City Firefighter testing is conducted on a yearly basis. Any interested, qualified candidates should submit a Provo City application and any required certifications to the Human Resources Division. Applications are accepted year-round. When testing dates are set, applicants are notified by e-mail and/or U.S. mail. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that the address on file is kept current. (Lateral transfers are required to go through the testing process.)

Minimum Requirements: 18 years of age at time of testing, high school diploma (GED), driver’s license, US Citizenship or in active process of becoming a citizen, and certification as an EMT. In order to test, candidates should have Firefighter I and II certifications as defined by NFPA and Utah Fire and Rescue Academy standards.

Firefighter/EMT Salary Range: $39,305 - $54,182 annually.

Firefighter/Paramedic Career Series Salary Range: $45,500 - $69,152 annually. Based on demonstrated proficiencies and meeting established criteria, the career series advancement for a Firefighter/Paramedic is expected as follows:

Upon hire: $45,500 annually starting pay (Firefighter/Paramedic)

After 1st Year: $46,638 annually

After 2nd Year: $47,804 annually

After 3rd Year: $48,999 annually

After 4th Year: $50,224 annually

After 5th year: $55,372 annually (Advancement to Senior Firefighter/Paramedic or Senior Firefighter/Engineer)

After 6th Year: 2.5% annual merit raise until the range max

At all levels, successful completion of an annual performance appraisal is required.
