Full-time Regular Position

Essential Duties:
This is skilled arboriculture maintenance work in the Provo City Energy Department. The individual appointed to this position will be required to perform the following duties: lead a tree trimming crew in their daily activities; supervise and participate in the work of tree trimmers; trim trees in parks, along streets and trails, and around high voltage lines; plant, cut, and fall trees; remove dead and broken limbs; guide the fall of trees and bushes; climb trees and perform aerial tree work with rope and saddle and aerial lift trucks; perform rigging maneuvers with ropes, blocks, slings, and other rigging tools and equipment; prune, water, plant, spray, evaluate, inventory, inject, remove, cable, wrap, transplant, stake, anchor, and brace trees; apply pesticide, remove stumps, and perform all other arboriculture maintenance of trees; load trucks with logs and other materials; feed chipper; operate pickup, aerial lift truck, line truck, front-end loader, high lift, tree spade, tree stumper, chain saws, pole saws, chippers, stump grinder, dump trucks, winch truck, hydraulic pruning tools, etc.; supervise maintenance of equipment and tools; inspect trucks, tools, and equipment used in forestry operations for safe condition and efficient operation; prepare and submit reports; maintain records; attend division meetings; resolve problems; confer with public officials, citizens, and property owners; make recommendations as needed; assist in notifying the public of tree maintenance work on public property; acquire easements on trees to be trimmed around power lines; assist the Forester in determining specific tree care needs and work schedules; assist in training employees; and perform other related work as required.

Minimum Requirements: A) Certification as an Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture; and B) 1: five (5) years of progressively responsible tree trimming work; or 2: an equivalent combination of job-related education and experience [substituting each one year of post-secondary education/training for six months of experience.] Applicant should be a three year Line Clearance Journeyman with certification in addition to regular Arborist Certification through the ISA. Candidate may be required to pass division competency tests during probation. New hire probationary period is one (1) year.

Licenses/Certifications: A valid, lawful Commercial Driver License is required. Flagman Training Certification and completion of OSHA 1910.269, ANSI-A300, and ANSI-Z133.1 training is required during probation. Completion of the DOL’s Line Clearance Arborist Apprenticeship or equivalent is required. A Utah Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s License may be required.

Salary: $1,750 $2,412 biweekly (range 26) plus full benefits package. Payment will be made by direct deposit and salary will normally begin at the first step of the salary range. Overtime will normally be accrued as compensatory time. Selection Factors: Extensive knowledge of: modern arboriculture practices and skills; including, natural target pruning, plant health care, integrated pest management, urban soils, hazard tree awareness, and knot tying; various types of tree pruning, climbing, and removal techniques; appropriate safety and first aid procedures; effective methods and techniques of tree trimming,(particularly in and around high voltage power lines); related laws, codes, rules and regulations governing functions of the position; and policies and procedures established for the work system. Skill in: performing duties in a manner that demonstrates respect, integrity, courtesy, and kindness towards fellow workers, customers, and the general public; and the proper use and care of hand and power tools and equipment required by the position. Ability to: exercise independent judgment in evaluating situations and making recommendations; communicate clearly and calmly with homeowners and the public; develop effective working relationships with crew members; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to individuals of diverse backgrounds; and organize assigned work and develop effective working methods.

Screening: Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job-related experience, skills, knowledge, and education. Selection for this position may be based largely upon an oral interview. Criminal background checks are conducted on all City positions. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal.

Physical/Environmental Factors: This work requires physical strength and agility to perform the work including-- heavy lifting, driving to sites, handling chain saws and tree pruners while climbing trees; working at heights of up to 100 feet; standing for extended periods of time; and exposure to adverse weather conditions, heavy traffic, heights, high noise levels, high voltage lines, dangerous equipment, and hazardous chemicals and conditions. Note: Employees of this class may be subject to on-call status. 

Pre-Employment Testing: Prior to appointment, applicant will be required to successfully pass a drug screening and background investigation. Individuals with unsatisfactory results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
