Essential Duties: This is a professional library position providing programs, activities, and services for children ages 0-12 and those interested in children's materials and services. The individual appointed to this position will be required to perform the following duties: provide effective reference service including training and assisting both professional and paraprofessional staff; serve as a resource and provide expertise in multiple areas; coordinate with Library Services Manager in recommending, planning, and executing programs, activities, and services; develop and create various promotional ideas and materials; may assist in the hiring, supervision, scheduling, evaluation, and discipline of assigned staff; may oversee designated area and/or highly specialized program including supervision, adherence to budgets and policies, and development of programs, goals, and objectives; assist in developing library-wide operating practices, rules, and regulations; assist in overseeing collection development; assist patrons in selecting, locating, and using material and equipment including print and online sources; conduct reference and Reader's Advisory interviews and answer informational requests; search online database in a networked environment; conduct library tours; attend staff meetings; read professional journals; perform research; attend conferences, seminars, and training sessions; and perform the work of lower level employees and other duties as needed.

Minimum Requirements: Librarian I: Bachelor’s degree OR an equivalent combination of job-related education or professional library experience. Librarian II: Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited school OR a Bachelor's degree and two (2) years’ experience at a level equal to a Librarian I. At all levels, an equivalent combination of job­ related education and/or professional librarian experience may be used [substituting each one year of post-secondary education/training for six months of full-time experience]. Basic computer skills, a working knowledge of the Internet, and experience working with the public is desirable. This position will require working some nights and weekends. New hire probationary period is one (1) year. NOTE: Applicants appointed to a career series directly at higher than the entry level must satisfactorily complete the associated advancement criteria during the probationary period.

Salary: Librarian I: $1,305 - $1,800 biweekly (Range 20); Librarian II: $1,439 - $1,984 biweekly (Range 22). Payment will be made by direct deposit and salary will normally begin at the first step of the salary range. Position includes a full benefits package, including: medical, dental, life, and LTD insurance plans, retirement plans, employee assistance and wellness programs, and sick, vacation, and holiday leaves. Optional plans available include: reimbursable medical and child care accounts, a health reimbursement account, a health savings account, vision and AD&D insurance, and deferred compensation (457 & 401k) plans. Overtime will normally be accrued as compensatory time.

Selection Factors: Knowledge of children’s literature and the principles, policies, procedures, methods, and practices of library administration; literature, media, and databases available for use; computerized operations including automated catalog and circulation systems, telecommunications, Internet, word processing applications, and related technical developments; MARC format, Dewey Decimal classification, and common cataloging and classification resources; and children's literature and the principles, methods and practices of librarianship. Skill in performing duties in a manner that demonstrates respect, integrity, courtesy, and kindness towards fellow workers, customers, and the general public; providing instruction, counseling, training, and direction; conducting a reader's advisory and reference interview; and developing and maintaining assigned materials collections. Ability to: act as a mentor to others; work independently; recognize and set priorities and direct and evaluate the work of others; supervise management of a large collection area; identify problems, research relevant information and implement solutions; and identify trends and recommend improvements.

Screening: Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job-related experience, skills, knowledge, and education. Selection may be based largely upon an oral interview. Criminal background checks are conducted on all City positions. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal.

Physical/Environmental Factors: This work requires pushing book carts; bending and shifting to rearrange library materials; long periods of answering telephones and entering data on computer; long periods of standing or sitting at a computer or desk; communicating with a wide variety of patrons; and occasional heavy lifting and carrying of library materials. Work location is in an open area subject to constant public contact, telephone calls, and frequent noise. May include exposure to high-stress situations or environments, including, contact with the public in confrontational or unpleasant circumstances.
