Essential Duties: This is streets maintenance work on a crew in the Streets Maintenance Division of the Public Services Department of Provo City Corporation. The individual appointed to this position will be required to do the following: patch holes in streets with asphalt; operate asphalt paving equipment; remove and reinstall concrete sidewalks; cut weeds along roads; may operate and perform minor repair and maintenance work on the following equipment: snow plows, sand trucks, water trucks, street sweeper, vacuum trucks, asphalt rollers and trailers, pavers, front-end loaders, fork lifts, ten-wheelers, jack hammers, compressors, and road graders; operate crack sealing equipment; clean and operate pavement marking and street marking equipment; fabricate and install signs; perform traffic safety functions including serving as flagger; install traffic control devices; rough in streets; fill dirt and road surfaces to grade specification; maintain dirt road surfaces, shoulders, and parking lots; lay asphalt to specifications with the blade; and load trucks and containers and perform demolition work. Employee will also be required to perform other related work as required.

Minimum Requirements and License Requirements: Apprentice Streets Maintenance Worker: One year of general equipment operation and/or maintenance experience or other job-related experience. A valid, lawful class ‘B’ commercial driver’s license is required at time of appointment. Applicant must obtain C.D.L. endorsement of ‘N’ required within the probationary period. Streets Maintenance Worker: Two (2) years experience as an Apprentice Streets Maintenance Worker; or three (3) years of comparable experience in a job-related field; a valid, lawful commercial driver’s license (with ‘N’ endorsement) and a flagger certification are required at the time of appointment. Senior Streets Maintenance Worker: Two (2) years experience as a Streets Maintenance Worker; or five (5) years of comparable experience in a related field; a valid, lawful, class “A” commercial driver’s license (with ‘N’ endorsement); and a flagger certification are required at time of appointment. New hire probationary period is one (1) Year. Note: This classification is part of a three-tier open career series. At the discretion of the department director, the individual selected may begin at or be later promoted to any level for which the requirements are met.

Salary: Apprentice Streets Maintenance Worker (Range 18): $1,184 - $1,632 biweekly; Streets Maintenance Worker (Range 20): $1,305 - $1,800 biweekly; Senior Streets Maintenance Worker (Range 22): $1,439 - $1,984 biweekly. Overtime will normally be accrued as compensatory time. Position includes a full benefits package, including: medical, dental, life, and LTD insurance plans, retirement plans, employee assistance and wellness programs, and sick, vacation, and holiday leaves. Schedule: DAY SHIFT: 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Note: Employees of this class are subject to on-call status and Provo City residency requirements.

Selection Factors: Knowledge of the safe use of hand and power tools; operation and maintenance of all streets maintenance equipment; the methods and techniques of structure maintenance and repair; the principles and practices of traffic control signing and pavement marking; related laws, codes, rules and regulations governing related functions of the position; and policies and procedures established for the work system. Skill in performing duties in a manner that demonstrates respect, integrity, courtesy, and kindness towards fellow workers, customers, and the general public. Ability to operate the tools and equipment used by the position; read and comprehend the English language; follow specific and general instructions; communicate with the public in a pleasant, courteous, and calm manner in all circumstances; and establish effective working relationships with the public, coworkers, and supervisors.

Screening:
Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job-related experience, skills, knowledge, and education. Selection may be based largely upon an oral interview. Criminal background checks are conducted on all City positions. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal.

Pre-employment Testing: Prior to appointment, applicant will be required to successfully pass a drug screening and background investigation. Individuals with unsatisfactory drug screening results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.

Physical/Environmental Factors: This work requires physical strength and agility to perform the work which includes: heavy lifting, standing, driving for extended periods of time, reaching, bending, stooping, and exposure to prolonged high noise levels, adverse weather conditions, odd work hours, dust, hazardous materials, heavy traffic and other varied physical activities associated with performing the essential duties of the job.
