Essential Duties: This position is with the Special Events team in the Parks and Recreation Department of Provo City Corporation. The individual appointed to this position will be required to do the following under the supervision of the Recreation Coordinator: design, organize, and supervise special events for the City of Provo, including children’s events, community holiday events, senior events, internal events, galas, concerts, and other special events; prepare promotional advertising for programs and events; operate within the guidelines of budgets; ensure adherence to operational policies and procedures; prepare and maintain reports, records, and equipment inventory; set up and take down of events; creative design and implementation of events; explain and enforce rules and regulations; assist other staff members and the public as needed; and perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent. Preference given to candidates with post-secondary education in Recreation or closely related field or (1) year of experience in Recreation program management or special events.

License: Valid, lawful driver’s license is required at time of appointment. Applicant may be disqualified on the basis of an unacceptable driving record as reflected by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.

Selection Factors: Knowledge of event planning, and other recreation tasks; and basic English composition, spelling, and grammar. Skill in performing duties in a manner that demonstrates respect, integrity, courtesy, and kindness towards fellow workers, customers, and the general public. Ability to organize special events and recreation activities; deal with the public in a pleasant, courteous, and calm manner in all circumstances; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; develop and maintain effective working relationships with employees, administration, media representatives, other agencies and the public; complete accurate records; enforce rules and regulations firmly but with tact; and demonstrate good judgement in decision making. Will be required to work over the holiday period from December 28th to December 31st as required.

Wage: $10.50 per hour. Payment will be made by direct deposit.

Schedule: Work schedule is flexible Tuesday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Employee will also be expected to adapt schedule to assist with special events, which will include working some Saturdays.

Screening: Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job-related experience, skills, knowledge, and education. Selection may be based largely upon an oral interview. Criminal background checks are conducted on all City positions. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal.

Physical/Environmental Factors: This work requires some lifting of objects up to 50 pounds and working at a computer terminal for extended periods of time; and office work and outdoor recreation work with some exposure to adverse weather conditions. May include exposure to high-stress situations or environments, including contact with the public in confrontational or uncomfortable circumstances.

Pre-employment Testing: Prior to appointment, applicant will be required to successfully pass a drug screening and background investigation. Individuals with unsatisfactory drug screening results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
