Essential Duties: This is skilled hardware and software technical support, computer operation, entry level programming, and computer training work. The individual appointed to this position will be required to perform the following duties: interact with users city-wide to identify and meet a wide variety of computer needs; deploy Windows workstations and install various city-approved software applications; maintain library of computer software and settings; provide basic instructions to users on software and computer utilization and on department procedures and operations; organize and instruct additional training classes if needed; install and train employees in the use of Internet software, internal and external e-mail, document scanning capabilities, printer functions, and file management processes; maintain city-wide “help desk” and analyze and troubleshoot both software and hardware specific problems including detecting and removing viruses, spyware, and other malware; recreate and/or restore lost files as needed; identify, advise on, and repair various computer problems or refer them to appropriate Information Systems personnel; may perform less complex programming assignments; install, repair, determine need for, and replace a variety of hardware including CD-ROM drives, modems, printers, computer cards, and other peripherals; assist with the use of miscellaneous items such as switch boxes, cables, scanners, plotters, etc.; monitor system performance including running various reports; analyze and determine needs for PC hardware, software, and other equipment and coordinate with vendors for pricing, ordering, and delivery of equipment or materials; facilitate the manufacturer’s warranty service on computers and peripherals; maintain accurate inventory of equipment; assist other staff members as needed, and perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements: Equivalent to a high school diploma or currently enrolled in or entering senior year in high school; and some training or experience in computer operation, programming, and/or technical support experience.
License: Valid, lawful driver’s license is required at time of appointment. Applicant may be disqualified on the basis of an unacceptable driving record as reflected by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.
Selection Factors: Knowledge of principles/practices of computer operation, communications, and programming; PC/LAN application software including browsers, word processing, spreadsheets, and database management; LAN and PC operating systems (Windows) and components including processors, motherboards, cards, accessories, and peripherals; related laws, codes, rules and regulations governing computer functions; and basic English composition, spelling, and grammar. Skill in performing duties in a manner that demonstrates respect, integrity, courtesy, and kindness towards fellow workers, customers, and the general public. Ability to model programs to needs of users for desired results; operate computers and equipment utilized by the City; understand and follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other departments, staff, and the public; and explain technical material in lay terms.
Wage: $11.00 - $14.00 per hour, depending on experience. Payment will be made by direct deposit.
Schedule: Flexible, based on department need. Approximately twenty hours per week Monday through Thursday.
Screening: Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job-related experience, skills, knowledge, and education. Selection for this position will be based largely upon an oral interview. Criminal background checks are conducted on all City positions. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal.
Physical/Environmental Factors: This position requires lifting up to 30 pounds, frequent walking to various work stations, sitting at a computer for extended periods of time; exposure to computers, electronics, and electrical devices, etc., and high-stress situations or environments, i.e.--teaching groups of employees, meeting deadlines, etc.
Pre-Employment Testing: Prior to appointment, applicant will be required to successfully pass a drug screening and background investigation. Individuals with unsatisfactory drug screen results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
