Essential Duties: This is professional work responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing recreational, athletic, senior, and/or special event programs for the Provo City Parks and Recreation Department. The individual appointed to this position will be required to perform the following duties: promote, organize, schedule, implement, and evaluate assigned recreational, athletic, senior, and/or special event programs; schedule needed facilities and ensure appropriate access; monitor status and condition of program equipment; order supplies and purchase program specific materials in accordance with established budgets; track expenses; make recommendations on needed materials not covered under existing budgets; develop marketing strategies under the direction of a supervisor; create flyers, brochures, announcements, and various program specific marketing materials; supervise part-time staff and/or volunteers assigned to specific programs; assist in the recruitment, evaluation, and training of staff; ensure adequate coverage for programs including scheduling and assigning work; ensure adherence to operational rules and procedures; ensure that part-time staff and/or volunteers understand, communicate, and enforce the rules and regulations of the assigned program; identify and report performance issues to the supervisor; evaluate assigned programs and provide informational feedback to supervisors regarding level of participation and program effectiveness compared to program costs; solicit information from program participants; maintain and prepare a variety of statistics and reports; assist in developing new strategies for programs including making recommendations on program changes; receive approval from supervisor prior to making significant program changes; assist other staff members and the public as needed, and perform other related duties as assigned. Note: Employees of this class are eligible for advancement to the next level in this career series as directed by policy and department need.
Minimum Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in recreation, physical education, or closely related field; or an equivalent combination of job-related education and experience [substituting each one year of post secondary education/training for six months of experience]. New hire probationary period is one (1) year.
License: Valid, lawful driver’s license is required at time of appointment. Applicant may be disqualified on the basis of an unacceptable driving record as reflected by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.
Selection Factors: Knowledge of the process and procedures required to organize and schedule recreational, athletic, and/or special event programs for both youth and adults; needed equipment for various recreational programs; basic management and supervisory practices; laws, codes, rules and regulations governing recreation programs; policies and procedures established for the work system; the operations, functions, and terminology common to recreation programs and activities; and basic English composition, spelling, and grammar. Skill in performing duties in a manner that demonstrates respect, integrity, courtesy, and kindness towards fellow workers, customers, and the general public. Ability to organize a broad range of classes, special events, and recreation programs; organize leagues, tournaments, game schedules and tournament brackets; analyze the value and cost effectiveness of activities; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; develop and maintain effective working relationships with employees, administration, media representatives, other agencies and the public; prepare clear, concise, and accurate reports; implement and maintain programs for the generation of revenue; exercise independent judgment while evaluating situations and in making determinations; and enforce rules and regulations in a fair and non-confrontational manner.
Salary: $1,439 - $1,984 biweekly (Range 22); Payment will be made by direct deposit and salary will normally begin at the first step of the salary range. Schedule: Schedule will vary. Some Saturday and evening work required.
Screening: Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job-related experience, skills, knowledge, and education; and review of application. Selection may be based largely upon an oral interview. Criminal background checks are conducted on all City positions. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal.
Physical/Environmental Factors: This work requires some lifting of objects up to 50 pounds and working at a computer terminal for extended periods of time. This work is office and outdoor work that involves dealing with the public in sometimes stressful or negative situations and exposure to adverse weather conditions.
Pre-employment Testing: Prior to appointment, applicant will be required to successfully pass a drug screening and background investigation. Individuals with unsatisfactory drug screening results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
