Black Box Assistant
Covey Center for the Arts/Parks and Recreation Department
Part-time Regular Position

Essential Duties: This is a position assisting in the technical area for the Covey Center for the Arts. The individual hired for this position will be required to perform the following duties: stage management for all black box production; assist with design and building of sets and props for productions, maintain props and costume inventories, assist with costuming, lighting, and audio as needed, run lighting and sound equipment, perform care and maintenance of stage equipment; perform backstage custodial tasks as needed; help in other areas of the building as needed; and perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Requirements: High School Diploma or equivalent. Applicant must also have at least 2 years of training or experience working in a theatrical environment. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in prop and scenic construction.

Selection Factors: Familiarity with the use of diverse theatrical and construction equipment, including power tools, rigging, lighting, and sound equipment. Ability to focus on and complete assigned tasks effectively and pay careful attention to detail. Applicant must also have good interpersonal skills.

License: Valid, lawful driver's license will be required at time of appointment. Applicant will be disqualified from driving for the City on the basis of an unacceptable driving record as reflected by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.

Hours: Schedule varies, but will be Monday through Saturday, based on performance and rehearsal schedules. Long shifts may be required.

Wage: $12.00 - $15.00 per hour, depending on experience. Payment will be made by direct deposit.

Screening: Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job-related knowledge, experience, education, and/or training. Criminal background checks are conducted on all City positions. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal.

Physical/Environmental Factors: This work requires walking; sitting; standing; bending; reaching; and lifting up to 70 pounds. It also requires being able to be in high places. Some events may include exposure to stressful situations.

Pre-employment Testing: Prior to appointment, applicants will be required to successfully pass a drug screening and background investigation. Individuals with unsatisfactory drug screening results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
