Essential Duties: This is automotive technician work within the Provo City Public Works Department, with responsibility to diagnose and repair various vehicles, equipment, and accompanying systems. The individual appointed to this position will be required to perform the following duties: diagnose and perform major and minor engine repairs on both light and heavy equipment including the inspection and replacement of broken or worn parts; inspect, diagnose, repair, rebuild, troubleshoot, clean, adjust, and install electrical, cooling, heating, steering, fuel, hydraulics, and ignition systems; repair, clean, and rebuild engines; repair and replace a variety of automotive parts; repair vehicle body and chassis parts using hand and power tools, welding equipment, cutting tools, and other specialized fabrication tools; diagnose and repair vehicle suspension issues; install, wire, and place emergency lighting and other equipment as needed in first responder vehicles and equipment; recommend proper repair or replacement methods; use and interpret readings of various electronic testing equipment; respond to road calls and perform emergency field repairs; assist in EVT repairs; perform and inspect scheduled preventive maintenance work on diesel and gasoline vehicles, tractors, mowers, generators and other equipment as needed; check and replenish fluid levels; replace hoses, belts, batteries, wiper blades, bulbs, and lamps; inspect, diagnose, and repair hydraulic and air brakes; perform general tune-ups, wheel balancing, and alignments; clean vehicles; prepare new vehicles and equipment for service and strip old vehicles for salvage; perform tire inspections; rotate, mount and balance tires for vehicles and equipment; perform safety inspections on vehicles in accordance with relevant laws, codes, and regulations; road test vehicles and equipment; maintain a variety of records and work logs; order parts and supplies as directed; advise and assist in the correction of any vehicles or equipment returned to the shop for workmanship issues; provide training on safety, repair, and vehicle operation as needed; may assist supervisor in personnel issues and performance appraisals; function as supervisor in his/her absence; and perform other duties as needed.
Minimum Requirements: At all levels, equivalent to a high school diploma is required. Auto Tech I: One (1) year of documented experience in repair and maintenance of automotive, truck, or heavy equipment systems. Auto Tech II: Three (3) years of documented experience in repair and maintenance of automotive, truck, and heavy equipment systems. At all levels, equivalent combinations of education and/or experience may be considered. New hire probationary period is one (1) year.
License/Certificate: At all levels, a valid, lawful Utah commercial driver’s license with air brakes endorsement is required. Auto Tech I: Must obtain a Utah State Vehicle Inspector Certificate within 6 months of hire. Must obtain a Utah County Vehicle Emissions Inspector Certificate within 1 year of hire. Auto Tech II: Must obtain Utah State Vehicle Inspector’s certificate and Utah County Vehicle Emissions Inspector’s certificate. Requires a minimum of two (2) valid ASE certifications in Automotive or Diesel Technology or Fleet Manager approved equivalency.
Selection Factors: Knowledge of vehicle and equipment service procedures; occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work; the principles of electrical conduction and insulation; policies and procedures established for the work system; and basic English composition, spelling, and grammar. Skill in performing duties in a manner that demonstrates respect, integrity, courtesy, and kindness towards fellow workers, customers, and the general public; the use and care of mechanical, electrical, and other specialized tools and testing equipment; and the diagnoses and repair of a wide variety of motorized vehicles, hydraulics, electrical systems, and equipment. Ability to read and interpret line drawings and blueprints, service charts, and records; weld and braze; work safely around hazardous equipment; perform work with speed and accuracy; and develop effective work methods.
Salary: Auto Tech I: $32,336 - $44,576 annually (Range 19); Auto Tech II: $35,651 - $49,145 annually (Range 21). Overtime will normally be accrued as compensatory time. Payment will be made by direct deposit and position includes a full benefits package, including: medical, dental, life, and LTD insurance plans, retirement plans, employee assistance and wellness programs, and sick, vacation, and holiday leaves. Screening: Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job-related experience, skills, knowledge, and education. Selection for this position may be based largely upon an oral interview. Criminal background checks are conducted on all City positions. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal.
Physical/Environmental Factors: Work is performed in an office, the field, and/or motor shop and exposes the incumbent to conditions such as fumes, noxious odors, hazardous chemicals, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation that could affect the respiratory system, eyes, or skin; also exposes the incumbent to possible bodily injury from moving mechanical parts of equipment, tools, and/or machinery. Work is performed for sustained periods of time outdoors and occasionally in hot, cold, or inclement weather; and requires use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
Pre-employment Testing: Prior to appointment, applicant will be required to successfully pass a drug screening and background investigation. Individuals with unsatisfactory drug screening results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
