Essential Duties: This is a position associated with the operation and maintenance of the City Water Reclamation Plant in the Public Works Department of Provo City Corporation. The individual appointed to this position will be required to perform the following duties: train in numerous activities associated with the operation and maintenance of the Water Reclamation Plant; perform maintenance and repair on a variety of mechanical equipment associated with several specific treatment processes and lift stations; maintain operations and maintenance records; assist in the maintenance and operation of chlorine and sulfur dioxide equipment; assist in the ultra violet disinfection process; assist in the maintenance of sludge thickening, digestion, and disposal processes; perform duties in preliminary treatment, primary sedimentation, activated sludge, chlorination/de-chlorination operations, and disinfection processes; collect and deliver samples for laboratory personnel; perform laboratory analysis; record readings; guide tours of plant; operate backhoe, loader, dump truck and end-dump trailer to load and haul biosolids; operate emergency generators and gas and electric powered pumps; assist other staff members as needed; and perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements: Apprentice: One year of work experience in maintenance and minor repairs of mechanical or hydraulic equipment, construction work, or other work where physical labor and mechanical aptitude were demonstrated [substituting each one year of post-secondary education/training for six months of experience]. Operator I: One (1) year of professional water operation experience and Grade I Utah Wastewater System Operator certification (unrestricted). Operator II: Two (2) years of professional water operation experience and Grade II Utah Wastewater System Operator Certification (unrestricted). Operator III: Four (4) years of professional water operation experience and Grade III Utah Wastewater System Operator Certification (unrestricted). Within one year of employment, must have experience in training in Water Reclamation Plant operations, maintenance and lift stations. New hire probationary period is one (1) year. NOTE: This classification is part of a four-tier open career series. At the discretion of the dept. director, the individual may begin at or be later promoted to any level for which the requirements are met.
License: Valid, lawful driver’s license is required at time of appointment. Applicant may be disqualified on the basis of an unacceptable driving record as reflected by the State Department of Motor Vehicles. A valid Class A CDL is required within 12 months of employment.
Salary: $17.16 - $28.72 hourly. Payment will be made by direct deposit and salary will normally begin at the first step of the salary range. Over time will normally be accrued as compensatory time. Schedule: Work schedule is shift work, starting on an afternoon shift, but is subject to change based on department need. Employee will also be expected to work weekends and holidays (Shifts: Mon. – Sun. 6:00 am - 4:30 pm; or 4:00 pm - 2:00 am.) Shift assignment will be at the discretion of management. Note: Employees of this class may be subject to on-call status with a 20 minute response time.
Selection Factors: Knowledge of electrical and mechanical equipment; repairing and maintaining pumps, motors, and engines; welding and fabricating parts; the operations, functions, and terminology common to water reclamation; laws, codes, rules, and regulations governing related functions of the position; policies and procedures established for the work system; and basic English composition, spelling, and grammar including basic computer skills. Skill in performing duties in a manner that demonstrates respect, integrity, courtesy, and kindness towards fellow workers, customers, and the general public; mechanical aptitude and dexterity; observation and troubleshooting; and reading and comprehending technical drawings and manuals.
Screening: Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job-related experience, skills, knowledge, and education. Selection may be based largely upon an oral interview. Criminal background checks are conducted on all City positions. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal.
Pre-employment Screening: Prior to appointment, applicant will be required to successfully pass a drug screening and background investigation. Individuals with unsatisfactory drug screening results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
Physical/Environmental Factors: This position requires physical strength and agility to perform the work which includes: lifting 70 lbs, climbing ladders, working on scaffolding, working in confined spaces; and exposure to adverse weather conditions, odors, dangerous gases and hazardous conditions such as open and aerated tanks, manholes, heights, and explosive conditions.
