Essential Duties: This is general library work providing service to the public in the Provo City Library at Academy Square. The individual appointed to this position will be required to do the following: assist Library patrons in selecting, locating and using library material; give and receive routine and complex information; check materials in and out; receive and class materials; handle user accounts; accept and handle cash in conformance with approved procedures; solve or refer problems to proper authority for resolution; troubleshoot and arrange for repair of equipment; assist public in equipment operation; delete items from library's database; oversee circulation area when circulation supervisor is gone; perform miscellaneous clerical functions; assist other staff members; and perform other related duties as required. Note: Employees are eligible for advancement in the career series as directed by policy.
Minimum Requirements: High school diploma or its equivalent required at all levels. Assistant I: Six (6) months of job-related experience. Library experience preferred and strong public relations skills desired. Assistant II: One (1) year of experience as a Library Assistant I OR 1.5 years of comparable experience (including 20 hours in reference). New hire probationary period is one (1) year.

Knowledge of alphabetical and numerical sequence Dewey Decimal System; library system and City policies, procedures, and philosophy; the operations, functions, and terminology common to library work; SirsiDynix Horizon circulation system preferred; related laws, codes, rules, and regulations governing functions of the position; and basic English composition, spelling, and grammar. Skill in using office equipment; and practicing trust-building behaviors. Ability to operate computer and office equipment; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; develop and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and superiors; quickly and accurately perform work; evaluate procedures; exercise independent judgment while evaluating situations and in making determinations; and organize assigned work and develop effective work methods.
Schedule: Forty hours per week. The schedule will be evenings, 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM, Monday-Thursday and alternating Friday and Saturday.
Salary: Library Assistant I: $974 $1,343 biweekly (range 14); Library Assistant II: $1,074 $1,481 biweekly (range 16); plus a full benefits package. Payment will be by direct deposit and salary will normally begin at the first step of the salary range. Screening: Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job-related experience, skills, knowledge, and education. A skills test may be used. Hiring for this position may be based largely upon an oral interview. Criminal background checks are conducted on all City positions. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal.
Physical/Environmental Factors: This is work in an office area subject to constant staff contact, telephone calls and frequent noise. May also include lifting and carrying books and boxes of books; and bending and shifting.
Pre-employment Testing: Prior to appointment, applicant will be required to successfully pass a drug screening and background investigation. Individuals with unsatisfactory drug test results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
