Essential Duties: This is a laborer position in the Waste Water Collections Section of the Provo City Public Works Department. The individual hired for this position will be required to perform the following duties: operate power rodding equipment of various sizes to clear lines; operate television viewing and sealing equipment to detect sewer line leaks and obstructions; seal leaks with packaging unit; operate jet cleaning unit to clean lines, ditches and culverts; assist in maintenance by manually cleaning and inspecting manholes; locate access points with metal detectors and inspection of maps; raise manholes to grade; clean homes or other buildings following sewer backups; keep equipment and shop area clean; operate power and hand tools; assemble safety pipes; cut roots, grease and other obstructing materials; clean out laterals; set up power equipment; perform minor maintenance and repair of electrical parts on TV truck; assist other departments needing jet machine; perform field sampling; may supervise subordinate workers as required; assist other crew members and the public as needed and perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements: Any training or experience which would demonstrate an ability to perform the work. Applicant must have the following: physical strength and agility enough to perform the work, ability to follow directions and communicate with the public in a courteous manner, and a knowledge of the safe use of hand tools and equipment required by the position.
License: Valid, lawful driver's license is required at time of appointment. Preference given to candidates with a commercial driver's license. Applicant may be disqualified on the basis of an unacceptable driving record as reflected by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.
Wage: $13.00 per hour depending upon skill level and experience.
Hours: 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Monday through Thursday.
Pre-employment Testing: Prior to appointment, applicant will be required to successfully pass a drug screening and background investigation. Individuals with unsatisfactory drug screening results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
Physical/Environmental Factors: This work requires lifting up to 100 lbs; and climbing in and out of manholes, walking, driving trucks, bending, stooping, and reaching. The candidate hired will work in adverse weather conditions, and be exposed to odors and hazardous conditions and work in and around heavy traffic. May periodically include exposure to high-stress situations or environments, including, contact with the public in confrontational or uncomfortable circumstances.
Screening: Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job related experience. Criminal background checks are conducted on all City positions. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal.
