Essential Duties: This is a part-time Assistant City Attorney position in the Provo City Legal Department. The position will be responsible for Domestic Violence Prosecution. The individual appointed to this position will be required to do the following: research legal issues and provide legal opinions; represent the City in court and hearings; negotiate on behalf of the City; conduct and supervise legal research; draft complaints, motions, pleadings, statements, written subpoenas, and responses; argue cases and motions in court or before administrative bodies; prosecute misdemeanors which involve evaluation and investigation of facts; interview witnesses; trial preparation; and provide leadership as needed to junior professional staff members. Additionally, employee will be required to perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Requirements: Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited law school and Utah State Bar membership. Preference given for experience, particularly in municipal government.

License: Valid, lawful driver's license is required at time of appointment. Applicant may be disqualified on the basis of an unacceptable driving record as reflected by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.

Selection Factors: Knowledge of the following: principles and practices of criminal prosecution as required by the Provo City Legal Department; and judicial procedures and rules of evidence. Skill in performing duties in a manner that demonstrates respect, integrity, courtesy, and kindness towards fellow workers, customers, and the general public. Ability to evaluate and organize facts and evidence; develop legal strategies and procedures; present information orally and in writing in a clear, concise, and logical form for administrative hearings or a court of law; deal with stressful situations firmly, tactfully, and with respect for individual rights; maintain effective working relationships with the public from varied racial, ethnic, and economic backgrounds; maintain effective working relationships with other City employees; and maintain positive liaison with police and other departments involved in the enforcement of City ordinances.

Wage: This position is grant funded and will pay $29.00 per hour. Payment will be made by direct deposit.

Schedule: Twenty (20) to twenty-five (25) hours per week, Monday through Thursday. Schedule is flexible and will be based on department need.

Duration of Contract: The position is contingent upon grant funding and the current grant runs until approximately September 2022.

Screening: Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job-related experience, skills, knowledge, and education. Criminal background checks are conducted on all City positions. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal.

Physical/Environmental Factors: This position requires court appearances; depositions in public and private buildings; and dealing with stressful situations due to the nature of legal work.

Pre-employment Testing: Prior to appointment, applicant will be required to pass a drug screening and background investigation. Individuals with unsatisfactory drug screen results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
