Fire Captain Promotional Examination (In-house only)

A promotional examination (including a technical, knowledge-related pretest and assessment center exercises) to establish the Provo City Fire Captain eligibility list will be conducted on the following dates: Wednesday, October 30, 2019, (technical, knowledge-related pretest), and Tuesday and Wednesday, November 5 and 6, 2019 (assessment center exercises). The exact time and location of each phase of the examination will be given later.

 In accordance with Civil Service Rules & Regulations 9-4, “A technical knowledge related pretest may be requested by the Chief to determine which individuals are qualified technically for a promotion.  Such test may be used to limit the number of applicants admitted to an assessment center.”  For this testing process, the top 20 candidates will advance from the technical, knowledge-related pretest to the assessment center exercises (Candidates must have 70% or above to advance.) 

Eligible employees interested in participating in this examination must sign-up with Chris Cooper in the Human Resources Division before 6:00 PM on Tuesday, October 22, 2019.  Eligibility for this testing is as follows: 

“Equivalent to a high school diploma; and five (5) years of service credit.  Service credit is defined as service as a Provo City Firefighter for Captain (to be not less than three of the five years), previous experience or education, OR an equivalent combination of education, training, or experience as provided by the Civil Service Commission. (See Civil Service Rules and Regulations 9-3.1 subsections (c) and (d) for allocation of previous experience or educational credit.)” 

“All requirements established by the Civil Service Commission and a valid, lawful driver’s license; current CPR certification by the Utah Heart Association; certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (Utah State Bureau of EMS Standards); certification as Fire Officer I, Fire Instructor I, and Fire Inspector I in accordance with NFPA and Utah Fire and Rescue Academy standards; and a basic understanding of fire ground hydraulics, pump operations, and fire ground water supply.”

Candidates who will become eligible during the life of the list are also permitted to take the exam as outlined in Civil Service Rules & Regulation 9-3.1 as follows:

            “Members of the Civil Service who would normally become eligible for promotion during the life of any promotional list may take the promotional examination prior to their eligibility date provided however, that they may not be considered for promotion until they attain service credit or time in rank as required herein.”
