Essential Duties: This is a professional library position providing programs, activities, and services for the general public in the Provo City Library at Academy Square. The individual appointed to this position will be required to do the following: assist library patrons in selecting, locating, and using library material and equipment, including automated catalog and circulations systems and both printed and online indexes and reference titles; conduct reference and Reader’s Advisory interviews; answer specific information requests; perform on-line database searching in a networked environment; create bibliographies and booklists to assist patrons with research/reference materials; explain user accounts for services; establish, alter, and close user accounts; resolve and/or refer problems to proper authority for resolution; provide general patron assistance; develop the Library’s collection through the review, selection, acquisition and cataloging of materials that meet the Library’s mission and goals; maintain special collections such as state documents and community information file; file and delete computer catalog information; assist in planning and executing library programs, activities, and services; develop and create various promotional ideas and materials to enhance programs, activities and services; maintain regular contact with other employees, the general public, local schools, and other public libraries; conduct library tours; attend staff meetings, provide guidance and act as reference to lower level library positions; read professional journals; perform research; attend conferences, seminars, and other training sessions; troubleshoot general office machinery and automated peripheral equipment problems and perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements: Librarian I: Bachelor’s degree OR an equivalent combination of job-related education and/or professional library experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities [substituting each one year of post-secondary education/training for six months of full-time experience]. Librarian II: A) Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited school; or B) Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of professional library experience equivalent to the level of a Librarian I; or C) an equivalent combination of job-related education and/or professional librarian experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities [substituting each one year of post-secondary education/training for six months of full-time experience]. Preference may be given to individuals with oral and written Spanish language skills. NOTE: Applicants appointed to a career series directly at higher than the entry level must satisfactorily complete the associated advancement criteria during the probationary period.
Salary: $15.55 per hour. No benefits. Payment will be made by direct deposit.
Schedule: Twenty four (24) hours per week, flexible. Weekend and evening hours will be required
Selection Factors: Knowledge of the principles, methods, and practices of librarianship; computerized library operations including automated catalog and circulation systems; MARC format and Dewey Decimal classification; reader interest levels, books, and authors; reference sources; policies and procedures established for the work system; the operations, functions, and terminology common to the work; and basic English composition, spelling, and grammar. Ability to work independently; conduct a reader’s advisory and reference interview; answer patron questions; develop and maintain assigned materials collections; create and edit MARC catalog records; establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, local schools, and library personnel; plan, organize, and evaluate library activities and programs; receive, understand, interpret, and carry out library policies and procedures; communicate effectively both orally and in writing, including speaking with small groups, providing training, and preparing formal and informal reports.
Screening: Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job-related experience, skills, knowledge, and education. Selection for this position may be based largely upon an oral interview. Criminal background checks are conducted on all City positions. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal.
Physical/Environmental Factors: This work requires pushing book carts; bending and shifting to rearrange library materials; long periods of standing or sitting at a computer or desk, answering telephones and entering data on a computer; communicating with a wide variety of patrons; and occasional heavy lifting and carrying of library materials. Work location is in an open area subject to constant public contact, telephone calls, and frequent noise. May include exposure to high-stress situations or environments, including contact with the public in confrontational or unpleasant circumstances.
