Essential Duties: We are hiring two intern positions in the Parks Division of the Provo City Parks and Recreation Department. The individual(s) appointed to this position will be required to assist the Parks Turf Specialist by performing the following duties: implement annual turf maintenance plan, accurately apply fertilizer and pesticides while maintaining strict records and perform other related duties as required. Intern will have the opportunity to assist in the creation of future Integrated Pest Management programs to be used throughout the city. 

Minimum Requirements: Student enrolled in a Parks and Recreation degree program or a related field. One year of general job-related experience is desired. 

License: Valid, lawful driver’s license is required at time of appointment. Applicant may be disqualified on the basis of an unacceptable driving record as reflected by the State Department of Motor Vehicles. Ability to receive Pesticide Applicator License through the state of Utah is also required. 

Selection Factors: Knowledge of: various grounds maintenance and construction equipment; the operations performed by the parks and grounds maintenance program; and the operations, functions, and terminology common to the work. Ability to: understand and follow oral and written instructions; work with speed and accuracy in a courteous manner when dealing with the public; effectively communicate orally and in writing; interact effectively with co-workers and the public; be self-motivated and exercise sound judgment; and work independently. 

Schedule/Duration: Up to 40 hours per week from April to October. 

Wage: $12.00 to $13.00 per hour based on experience and licenses obtained. Payment will be made by direct deposit. 

Screening: Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job-related experience, skills, knowledge, and education. Selection may be based largely upon an oral interview. Criminal background checks are conducted on all City positions. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal. 

Physical/Environmental Factors:  This work requires: strenuous physical labor; walking; bending; reaching; lifting (up to 70 lbs.); exposure to adverse weather conditions, fertilizer, and some pesticides. This work may be outdoors during the summer months and requires continued exposure to sunlight. May involve stressful circumstances including interactions with the public in negative situations. 

Pre-employment Testing: Prior to appointment, applicant will be required to successfully pass a drug screening and background investigation. Individuals with unsatisfactory drug screen results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six months.
