Essential Duties: This is work in recreation program planning and organizing in the Parks and Recreation Department of Provo City Corporation. There will be one lead camp counselor and four additional camp counselors hired to work specifically with youth participants with special needs. The individuals appointed to these positions will be required to do the following under the supervision of the Recreation Coordinator or appointed staff: plan, organize, and supervise recreation activities associated with the Adaptive Adventure Kids Camp program; supervise youth with disabilities attending the camp; operate within the guidelines of budgets; ensure adherence to operational policies and procedures; prepare and maintain reports, records, and equipment inventory; explain and enforce rules and regulations; assist other staff members and the public as needed; and perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements: The lead adaptive camp counselor position is required to have a degree or current certification related to working with individuals with disabilities as well as experience in youth recreation programs or education. Additional camp counselor positions will be selected with preference given to candidates with post-secondary education in recreation management, special education, or closely related field or (1) year of experience working with individuals with disabilities or youth recreation programs.
License: Valid, lawful driver’s license is required at time of appointment. Applicant may be disqualified on the basis of an unacceptable driving record as reflected by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.
Selection Factors: Knowledge of working with individuals with disabilities and youth recreation programs; the ability to organize arts, crafts, and recreation activities; deal with the public in a pleasant, courteous and calm manner in all circumstances; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; develop and maintain effective working relationships with employees, administration, media representatives, other agencies and the public; complete accurate records; enforce rules and regulations firmly but with tact; and demonstrate good judgment in decision making.
Wage: $10.00 to $12.00 per hour, depending on experience and certifications. Payment will be made by direct deposit.
Schedule: Approximately 20-25 hours per week; Monday through Friday 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Duration of Position: June to August 2020.
Screening: Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job-related experience, skills, knowledge, and education. Selection may be based largely upon an oral interview. Criminal background checks are conducted on all City positions. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal.
Physical/Environmental Factors: This is outdoor recreation work requiring lifting of objects up to 50 pounds and possible exposure to adverse weather conditions. May include exposure to high stress situations or environments, including contact with the public in confrontational or uncomfortable circumstances.
Pre-employment Testing: Prior to appointment, applicant will be required to successfully pass a drug screening and background investigation. Individuals with unsatisfactory drug screening results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
