Essential Duties: This is an arboriculture laborer position in the Parks Maintenance Division of the Provo City Parks and Recreation Department. The individual hired for this position will be required to perform the following duties: aerial tree work using rope and saddle, chain saws, hand tools, aerial bucket trucks, stump grinders, and other tree-related equipment; routine nursery maintenance including watering, weed control on various sites, mowing, edging, digging, spading, stacking, etc.; pick up debris and litter and empty various containers into trucks and receptacles; load, dump, and pack refuse and debris; operate vehicles, including dump truck; empty truck loads as directed; perform minor landscaping duties as needed; and assist in cleaning and maintaining tools and equipment. Employee will assist other crew members as needed/directed and perform other related work as required.
Minimum Requirements: Any training or experience which would demonstrate an ability to perform the work. Preference given to applicants with previous tree maintenance experience. Additionally, applicant must be at least 18 years old by the time of appointment.
License: Valid, lawful driver's license will be required at time of appointment. Applicant may be disqualified on the basis of an unacceptable driving record as reflected by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.
Selection Factors: Ability to follow directions, communicate with the public in a courteous manner, and a knowledge of the safe use of hand tools and equipment required by the position.
Wage: $11.00 - $13.00 per hour. Payment will be made by direct deposit.
Hours: Approximately forty (40) hours per week, Monday through Saturday. Schedule varies and employee will be required to periodically be on-call.
Duration of Position: Approximately April to November 2020.
Screening: Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job-related experience. Selection may be based largely upon an oral interview. Criminal background checks are conducted on all City positions. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal.
Physical/Environmental Factors: This work requires climbing, bending, carrying, heavy lifting (including heavy trees, logs, and other tree sections), loading, digging trenches, holes, and other excavations; and exposure to adverse weather conditions, high noise levels, and pesticides.
Pre-employment Testing: Prior to appointment, applicant will be required to successfully pass a drug screening and background investigation. Individuals with unsatisfactory drug screening results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six months.
