Seasonal Position 

Positions Available:

Essential Duties: This is weed abatement work needed seasonally by the Parks Division of the Provo City Parks and Recreation Department. The individual appointed to this position will be required to perform the following duties: receive, process, and investigate complaints and/or reports of City properties with herbaceous and woody weeds which are in violation of the nuisance codes of Provo City; pick up debris and litter; clean and maintain pavilions, restrooms, playgrounds and other facilities; respond to inquiries regarding compliance or processes; prepare and present proper oral and written communication to supervisors; when necessary, refer items for further action through legal remedies; coordinate issues with nuisance abatement administrator; empty various containers into trucks and receptacles; load, dump, and pack landscaping materials; may operate trucks and empty truck loads as directed; use hand and power tools; pull weeds, lay sod, plant flowers, and prune trees and shrubs; perform major landscaping duties such as operating ride-on and walk-behind lawn mowers, weed mowers, tractors, string trimmers, edgers, sod cutters, aerators, fertilizer spreaders, tractors, and other equipment related to park and grounds maintenance; and assist in cleaning and maintaining tools and equipment. Employee will be expected to assist other crew members as needed/directed and perform other related duties as required. 

Minimum Requirements: Any training or experience which would demonstrate an ability to perform the work. Preference given to applicants with previous similar work experience.

License: Valid, lawful driver’s license is required at time of appointment. Applicant may be disqualified on the basis of an unacceptable driving record as reflected by the State Department of Motor Vehicles. Applicant will be required to obtain a Utah Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicator License. 

Wage: $11.00 - $13.00 per hour, depending upon qualifications. Payment will be made by direct deposit. 

Duration of Position: July to November, 2020, or as directed by the season.

Schedule: Forty (40) hours per week, Monday through Saturday. Hours variable.

Selection Factors: Ability to follow directions, communicate with the public in a courteous manner, and a knowledge of the safe use of hand tools and equipment required by the position.

Screening: Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job-related experience, skills, knowledge, and education. Selection may be based largely upon an oral interview. Criminal background checks are conducted on all City positions. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal. 

Pre-employment Screening: Prior to appointment, applicant will be required to successfully pass a drug screening and a background investigation. Individuals with unsatisfactory drug screening results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months. 

Physical/Environmental Factors: This work requires office work and field inspections which may require physical exertion while resolving reported violations; ability to move among construction equipment and unfinished projects and through areas of reported violations; and other varied physical activities associated with performing the essential duties of the job. This position may include exposure to adverse weather conditions; work in areas with unknown conditions which may be unsafe; and exposure to high-stress situations or environments, including contact with the public in confrontational or uncomfortable circumstances.
